1. The History of Smart Cards

The first automated chip card was developed by Helmut Grottrup and his partner Hurgen Dethloff in Germany. The year was 1968, but his patent was not approved until 1982. By 1983, these cards were first used in France for their pay phone system.
The concept of a memory card was patented by Roland Moreno in 1974. Microprocessor smart cards were invented in 1977 by Michel Ugon and shortly afterward, the ability to auto program the chip was defined. By 2006, mergers and acquisitions produced the world’s top smart card manufacturer, Gemalto.

For those who missed it, the 1942 nightly rack rate was $5.00 single and $7.00 double. By 1974 it was $45.00 and $55.00. Last year it was $210 to $270 single or double depending on location.
