3. File chapter 7 yourself
November 06, 2009
Like most people, you want to do it your way. If this is the case, then you want to file chapter 7 yourself. I warn you, this is a tough act for anyone to do. It is hard to file bankruptcy now a days because of the improved bankruptcy laws under the BAPCPA or Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act. This law started to take effect on October 2005, making it difficult for everyone to file bankruptcy, especially chapter 7. Before the new bankruptcy law, people can just choose a type of bankruptcy according to their liking. If a person likes a chapter 7 over a chapter 13, th... (read more)

5. A Closer Look at Lexmark
November 05, 2009
In 2005, Berkshire Hathaway bought about a million shares of Lexmark. I haven't followed this story closely, but I assume the stock was purchased by Lou Simpson rather than Warren Buffett. I have only two reasons for believing this: the total purchase was small relative to Berkshire's investable assets and the Lexmark purchase is typical of Simpson's investment philosophy (or at least, what little I can glean about his investment philosophy from his past purchases). Regardless of who actually makes the purchases, a new Berkshire holding always draws a lot of commentary.
The commentary on ... (read more)

November 02, 2009
A controversial new Russian holiday was created only a few years ago in 2005. National Unity Day, also called People’s Unity Day, is celebrated on November 4th. There are two types of bankrupties that most consumers file. A chapter 7 or a chapter 13.
A chapter 7 is the wipeout that most people associate with filing a personal BK. The laws changed in 2005 and it is now more difficult to qualify.
A chapter 13 is a 3-5 year repayment plan where the courts will determine how much you can pay (based on a calculated discretionary income) YOU MAY HAVE TO PAY OFF ALL OF YOUR DEBT. Only save interest and late fees.
