Academia, Acadème, or the Academy are collective terms for the community of students and scholars engaged in higher education and research. The word comes from the akademeia, just outside ancient Athens, where the gymnasium was made famous by Plato as a center of learning. The sacred space, dedicated to the goddess of wisdom, Athena, had formerly been an olive grove, hence the expression "the groves of Academe."[1] By extension Academia has come to connote the cultural accumulation of knowledge, its development and transmission across generations and its practitioners and transmitters. In the 17th century, British and French religious scholars popularized the term to describe certain types of institutions of higher learning. The British adopted the form academy, while the French adopted the forms acadème and académie. An academic is a person who works as a researcher (and usually teacher) at a university, college, or similar institution in post-secondary (tertiary) education. He or she is nearly always an advanced degree holder. In the United States, the term academic is approximately synonymous with that of the job title professor although in recent decades a growing number of institutions are also including academic or professional librarians in the category of "academic staff." In the United Kingdom, various titles are used, typically fellow, lecturer, reader, and professor (see also academic rank), though the loose term don is often popularly substituted. The term scholar is sometimes used with equivalent meaning to that of "academic" and describes in general those who attain mastery in a research discipline. It has wider application, with it also being used to describe those whose occupation was researched prior to organized higher education.

Then there are others and you may be one of them, who have a yearning to get out and have a taste of life. Not necessarily quit school or stop learn... (read more)

November 01, 2009
Everywhere I turn, I see, read and hear how capitalism has destroyed the American economy. The political Left blames capitalism outright, while the political Right claims capitalism is the American ideal. The elitists in banking, government, academia and the media give lip-service to the idea of a free market, when they, in fact, have no use for it. The real purpose of claiming that free markets are the American ideal is to give the collectivist a scapegoat to blame for all their nefarious wealth redistribution programs. Too many of today's activists have fallen for this intentional misdirecti... (read more)

19. A Day in the Life at a Spanish Immersion School in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica
February 16, 2009
I was told to arrive a day early and stay at the Best Western Kamuk, located in downtown Quepos, Costa Rica. As I exited the bus and started off down the unfamiliar street, luggage in tow, my very first observation about this quaint little sportsfishing town were its sidewalks. Unlike any place with sidewalks I had ever seen, these sidewalks were raised approximately two feet above the street, making for a nasty spill if one was to veer a tad too far off to the side. At first, I was indifferent about this interesting little characteristic of my new home for the next semester, until I realiz... (read more)

21. New Generations Learn About Intellectual Property
October 07, 2008
Until recently, intellectual property (IP) was a legal specialty practiced by a small number of attorneys, most of whom gained their knowledge of the subject working for IP-related companies or clients. Due the dearth of college courses offered on IP, the most rigorous training they had in the field was probably an introductory course or overview.
This meant that the real educators in the field of IP were the companies offering, for lack of a better term, “on the job training.” Academia having failed to keep pace with the accelerated evolution of IP law, this training was essential to sup... (read more)
