An acid (from the Latin acidus meaning sour) is traditionally considered any chemical compound that, when dissolved in water, gives a solution with a hydrogen ion activity greater than in pure water, i.e. a pH less than 7.0. That approximates the modern definition of Johannes Nicolaus Brønsted and Martin Lowry, who independently defined an acid as a compound which donates a hydrogen ion (H +) to another compound (called a base). Common examples include acetic acid (in vinegar) and sulfuric acid (used in car batteries). Acid/base systems are different from redox reactions in that there is no change in oxidation state. Acids can occur in solid, liquid or gaseous form, depending on the temperature. They can exist as pure substances or in solution. Chemicals or substances having the property of an acid are said to be acidic (adjective). The Swedish chemist Svante Arrhenius attributed the properties of acidity to hydrogen in 1884. An Arrhenius acid is a substance that increases the concentration of the hydronium ion, H3O+, when dissolved in water. This definition stems from the equilibrium dissociation of water into hydronium and hydroxide (OH-) ions In pure water the majority of molecules exist as H2O, but a small number of molecules are constantly dissociating and re-associating. Pure water is neutral with respect to acidity or basicity because the concentration of hydroxide ions is always equal to the concentration of hydronium ions. An Arrhenius base is a molecule which increases the concentration of the hydroxide ion when dissolved in water. Note that chemists often write H+(aq) and refer to the hydrogen ion when describing acid-base reactions but the free hydrogen nucleus, a proton, does not exist alone in water, it exists as the hydronium ion, H3O+.

Gout is rather painful what with the excruciating pain appearing suddenly at one or two joints simultaneously. Gout is said to occur when the body produces uric acid much more than it is required. Such a buffer stock of excess uric acid causes inflammation of the body joints.

8. Are You Using The Best Eye Serum Available?
November 01, 2009
There are a lot of things that a formula must do in order for it to be considered as the best eye serum available. Most people equate the factors that cause our skin to degrade as little more than the loss of our collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid. This is probably a notion that was put in their heads by the major cosmetics companies, because these are the only things that their formulas seem to focus on.
Okay, to the cosmetics giants’ credit they do often include antioxidants in their products, so they do recognize that some of the damage to our skin is caused by free radicals. The a... (read more)

12. Learn More about Omega 3 Fatty Acids
November 01, 2009
Let’s face it, there has been a great deal of scientific debate concerning which omega 3 fatty acids are essential in the human diet. Years ago, researchers found that alpha-lipoic acid, which is found in vegetable oils, like flaxseed, could be converted within the body to Eicosapentaenoic acid and then to Docosahexaenoic acid, using an intermediary called Docosapentaenoic acid to elongate the chain.
To use the letters, ALA can be converted to EPA and then to DHA, through the use of DPA to make the chain of carbon bonds longer. This process is obviously inefficient.

21. What are Branched Chain Amino Acids (BCAA) and how can they help
October 28, 2009
Branched chain amino acids or BCAA are made up of leucine, iso leucine and valine, three types of amino acids. These amino acid molecules form a branched structure when they come together, which is why they are called branched chain amino acids. BCAAs form over 65 percent of the total 20 amino acids present in the body. This explains the reason for its importance. Another reason why BCAA is important is that they form a part of those amino acids that the body does not synthesize itself; it receives them from the diet. The essential quality of BCAA does not rely only in its proportion of being a... 22. How helpful is creatine as a supplement?
October 28, 2009
Creatine is a nutrient that is synthesized by the body itself, which energizes the muscles, strengthens them, expands the cell volume and acts as a buffer for lactic acid. How it works?Your body consumes energy while exercising. The immediate source for this energy is ATP or Adenosine Tri Phosphate for which the body has a separate reserve. Whenever you begin exercising, energy is taken from the ATP molecules, which last for only about 15 seconds, and converts into ADP. Of course, you can exercise much longer than that. So, where does the extra energy come from? The energy comes from creatine ... (read more)

23. Humic Acid
October 28, 2009
Humic acid comes from Humus, which in turn is formed by the breaking down of compost into the simplest building blocks. Humus leads to the formation of humic acid when it is treated with Sodium Hydroxide after lowering the solution’s pH balance to 2. At this point of time, the organic matter from the solution is separated and this dries up to form humate or Humic acid. This organic substance called Humic acid comes useful in several purposes. This acid is extremely beneficial for plant growth and the various other natural processes concerning the plant and the soil. For example, Humic acid br... (read more)
