In grammar, an adjective is a word whose main syntactic role is to modify a noun or pronoun, giving more information about the noun or pronoun's referent. Collectively, adjectives form one of the traditional English eight parts of speech, though linguists today distinguish adjectives from words such as determiners that also used to be considered adjectives. Not all languages have adjectives, but most, including English, do. (English adjectives include big, old, and tired, among many others.) Those that do not, typically use words of another part of speech, often verbs, to serve the same semantic function; for example, such a language might have a verb that means "to be big", and would use a construction analogous to "big-being house" to express what English expresses as "big house". Even in languages that do have adjectives, one language's adjective might not be another's; for example, while English uses "to be hungry" (hungry being an adjective), French uses "avoir faim" (literally "to have hunger"), and where Hebrew uses the adjective "זקוק" (zaqūq, roughly "in need of"), English uses the verb "to need". In most languages with adjectives, they form an open class of words; that is, it is relatively common for new adjectives to be formed via such processes as derivation. Many languages, including English, distinguish between adjectives, which modify nouns and pronouns, and adverbs, which modify verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs. Not all languages have exactly this distinction, however, and in many languages (including English) there are words that can function as both. For example, in English fast is an adjective in "a fast car" (where it modifies the noun car), but an adverb in "he drove fast" (where it modifies the verb drove).

1. The Indispensable Pillar Of Writing: How To Use Phrases
November 12, 2009
A phrase is a group of words without a subject and a conjugated verb; some phrases may have a subject or a conjugated verb, but not both. Each phrase contains a "central" or predominant word or words which are often called the 'head of the phrase.'
Noun phrases function as subjects, direct object, indirect objects, or objects of prepositions:
My canary is sad. [My canary is a noun phrase functioning as the subject of the sentence.]
My yellow canary hits high Cs. [Noun preceded by adjective.]
Dr. Sung pulled Mrs. Kim's tooth. [The noun phrases here are proper names.]
The thief st... (read more)

2. Some Ways a German Language Marketing Translation Go Sour
November 05, 2009
The German culture is known for many things, including a love of sauerkraut, but one lesser known fact is how exacting and precise is the language. As Mark Twain once wrote of a language student, in Stuttgart "he would rather decline two drinks than one German adjective." How right he was! The same culture that crafts world famous cars to extreme tolerances makes equally exacting demands on their spoken and written language. It's no surprise then that even large companies sometimes get it horribly wrong when attempting to convey their message in German.
Let's look at some examples whe... (read more)

3. The Power of Thought
October 12, 2009
It has always been seen that a leader “thinks” differently than others. It’s the power of thought that makes them different and stand out. Thinking can make all the difference to your self esteem and self assessment. In turn, good thinking can render anyone more confident and far more successful. There have been so many portrayals of the fact in movies, stories and playbacks. For example, have you watched Yes Man? No, it’s not an adjective for a big time slave or a submissive man. It’s a Hollywood movie starring Jim Carrey. This movie talks about the power of thought; how your thinking con... (read more)

4. Adjectives Are Coloring Words That Splash
October 02, 2009
Not long ago as I was re-reading Harper Lee's To King a Mockingbird, I noticed something that I had skipped over so many times in past readings: a grammatical lesson on the adjective, right from the narrator's mouth.
Scout says: "Atticus told me to delete the adjectives and I'd have the facts."
What are adjectives?
Atticus Finch was correct in his advice. In general adjectives limit, narrow, describe, embellish, adorn, or simply encroach on nouns. But they don't change them. Strip the nouns of all qualifications and there you have the plain, naked facts.
But it just happens tha... (read more)

10. 11 points to consider when someone f**ks up
June 29, 2009
Everyone prefers to be the JUDGE rather than the JUDGED, yet as long as blood runs through our veins, we make mistakes and cant escape a judge’s verdict when we do. It’s easier to give verdicts when people are wrong and then again, we detest verdict when we are the wrong ones. I accept that people goof, mess up f**k up, flop, foul up, make mistakes or no matter the adjective you choose to qualify it – people shit. Our style of approach either destroys their esteem or make them wiser. So I write this piece because there are lotta high minded people who expect you to be perfect yet want you to u... (read more)

12. Learn About Mnemonic Tools To Get Better Memory
March 30, 2009
For those of you who may have never heard of the word, mnemonic means memory aid. It's an adjective related to things that help memory improvement. Teaching tools, if you will.
If you are a movie buff, you may have heard of the one called 'Johnny Mnemonic', a 1995 feature involving a data courier. Keanu Reeves is the star of the film. He carries a large data package, 320 gigabytes in size, in his mind. If he doesn't deliver it from Beijing to Newark, it will kill him. I suppose you could call this forced memory. It wasn't his brain that developed this computer chip, this memory tool. It ... (read more)

13. Mastering Your Mind Power: You ARE Worthy!
March 20, 2009
A dictionary definition for Worth is: The quality that renders something (someone) desirable, useful, or valuable. Worthy is the adjective form of worth and is defined as: Having worth, merit, or value: useful or valuable.
I believe that it is so very tragic that so many people truly believe that they are not worthy of having and experiencing more of the abundance that life offers. Most people only think of themselves as having worth if they have a large bank account or large asset holdings at this moment.
It may be true that nearly all people feel less than worthy at one time or an... (read more)

14. Buying a Designer Engagement Ring
March 16, 2009
Be wary of the word "designer," because it can be used to mean very different things. Don't confuse "designer" rings with "custom" rings; just because you are choosing a loose diamond at a jeweler does not make it a designer ring. This kind of ring is better referred to as a "custom" ring.
According to the Encarta dictionary, designer as an adjective means: “designed by somebody famous; created or produced by a famous designer.” There is a difference between a ring designed by a well-renowned jeweler and one made by someone else.
When a man gives a woman an engagement ring, he is pr... (read more)

17. Seven ways French is easier than English
January 21, 2009
by Philip Yaffe
Native English speakers are notoriously poor at learning other languages because by comparison other languages are notoriously more difficult than English. Well, not quite. Some years ago I learned Swahili (the national language of Tanzania), which I found to be embarrassingly easy.
True, few native English speakers are ever likely to want to learn Swahili, but rather German, French, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, and some other European language. Admittedly, in many ways these are more difficult than English. However, by zeroing in on their difficulties,... (read more)

December 11, 2008
I hear this word a lot and really don't fully understand what it means. At wikipedia.com it means “In anatomy, lumbar is an adjective that means of or pertaining to the abdominal segment of the torso, between the diaphragm and the sacrum (pelvis).”So why do we need lumbar support? 25. The Tale of a Catchy Resume
October 30, 2008
The first step in job hunting is to pass a resume. While resume tells something in the past, it does not totally dwell there. It tells something done in the past and creates history in the present. It is an adjective that modifies who you are and a mirror that reflects what you have. While most job hunters disregard the importance of having a catchy resume, employers don't. The moment they can't get their eyes off it, the more chances of being invited for an interview. With a fierce competition, the least one can do is to be unappealing. #Since resumes speaks for the person, a well writt... (read more)
