Jóia, por definição, é um artefato feito de material precioso – metal ou de pedrarias – e que se usa como adorno pessoal, ou seja, como enfeite pessoal. Esta seria uma definição clássica. As jóias, porém, têm sentidos mais profundos para nós, seres humanos. Quando decidimos usar uma determinada jóia, esta, quase sempre, tem um significado muito especial em nossa vida. As joias são objetos feitos de pedras e materiais naturais preciosos, ou de metal precioso como, por exemplo, joias em ouro, joias religiosas, joias da Terra Santa, cruz em ouro, etc. São objetos finamente trabalhados e que funcionam como acessórios de vestuário, adorno de cabeça, pescoço, orelhas, braços e dedos. Mas será que é possível escrever uma “história das joias”? Como será que elas evoluíram até chagar ao que são hoje? Pesquisando um pouco pode-se descobrir coisas muito interessantes sobre essa evolução.

3. Hello from Sicily - An Italian Cooking Class

I had thoroughly enjoyed my personal Sicilian history lesson provided by Alessandro Adorno, the Founder and Director of the Babilonia Language School. In addition he suggested that I attend one of the cooking classes organized by Babilonia that gives Italian language students an opportunity to create Sicilian delicacies first-hand.

4. Hello from Sicily: A Hike to Castelmola and a Taste of Sicily

A rainy morning had provided a great opportunity to get the owners of my hotel a bit better. After my interview with the Sciglio family I took a leisurely stroll through Taormina and headed back to the Babilonia Language School to use the Internet and get ready for an excursion at 4 pm. Along the way I met the owner and director of the School, Alessandro Adorno, and I had an opportunity to get to him a little better.
