Advocacy is the pursuit of influencing outcomes –including public-policy and resource allocation decisions within political, economic, and social systems and institutions- that directly affect people’s lives. (Cohen, 2001) Therefore, advocacy can be seen as a deliberate process of speaking out on issues of concern in order to exert some influence on behalf of ideas or persons. Based on this definition, Cohen (2001) states that “ideologues of all persuasions advocate” to bring a change in people’s lives. However, advocacy has many interpretations depending on the issue at stake, which can be different from this initial value-neutral definition. There are several forms of advocacy, which each represent a different approach in the way change is brought into society. One of the most popular forms is social justice advocacy.

October 07, 2008
The importance of requesting a reevaluation when your child's needs change -- not only to that ensure appropriate services are provided, but to arm yourself with evidence of your child's needs at the time -- cannot be overemphasized. September 02, 2008
The Legal Process Outsourcing has brought geometrical changes to the advocacy. It is the globalization which has brought LPO into focus. Somebody had rightly defined law as common sense. This hypothetical definition becomes clear when we look into Legal Process Outsourcing. Lawyer’s of one country start working for the of other country. The barriers of different laws are shattered. Knowledge no more remains confined to one country. The big solicitors firm like “Clifford Chance”, “Linklaters”, “Allen & Overy” have no more been confined to one country they have opened their offices in Europ... (read more)

12. Security Cameras Catch Criminals
June 25, 2008
Many advocates claim security cameras are ineffective weapons against crime. Despite the multitude of research studies that show reduced crime rates in regions under surveillance these few people are still not convinced. One study of car parking garages showed a 51% reduction of criminal acts. Security cameras are an integral part of police investigation and special police units are dedicated to their use. Often officers with special training are monitoring 50-60 cameras at a time in a single room, which can be a monotonous ordeal, as camera feeds rotate through monitors every 5 – 10 seconds. ... The Environmental Working Group is one of my favorite consumer advocacy groups. They hold no bars. No matter how big, powerful or even a respected natural company, EWG says it like it is.
In 2007 EWG reported that the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics (CSC) tested 33 brands of lipstick from various locations in the Northeast. Two television news programs, KCBS and Pittsburgh’s WPXI, both tested several brands as well.

15. Advocacy
June 10, 2008
I’m thinking to myself while walking down the street: everywhere I go lately, I encounter advocacy. At the intersection of a one-way street and a two-way street, there is written on the sidewalk at the corner, in bold purple chalk, in front of an old white clapboard house, this sentence, “Be responsible for your own life.” I imagine that here lives a philosopher, and an advocate of responsibility. I wonder if the philosopher/advocate’s dinner was burnt while he or she kneeled on the sidewalk scratching out the message.
An SUV scoots past me advocating a lifestyle. It roars up the one ... (read more)

16. Blue Doves and a War Zone
June 10, 2008
It’s hot and I’m walking in a war zone. There is tension here in the cool sycamore shade, in the hot hissing blacktop, wafting in and out of the contrasting temperatures. On a lawn to my right, slightly elevated and beneath a large picture window is a sign that states, “War is Not the Answer”. The words are shouted in baby blue, the silhouette of a dove in flight floats in a corner on the white background. My contrarian mind wonders what is the question and why be so obtuse. When one has something to say, especially something important, I’ve found that few one liners adequately express th... (read more)
