In mathematics, computing, linguistics and related subjects, an algorithm is a sequence of finite instructions, often used for calculation and data processing. It is formally a type of effective method in which a list of well-defined instructions for completing a task will, when given an initial state, proceed through a well-defined series of successive states, eventually terminating in an end-state. The transition from one state to the next is not necessarily deterministic; some algorithms, known as probabilistic algorithms, incorporate randomness. A partial formalization of the concept began with attempts to solve the Entscheidungsproblem (the "decision problem") posed by David Hilbert in 1928. Subsequent formalizations were framed as attempts to define "effective calculability" (Kleene 1943274) or "effective method" (Rosser 1939225); those formalizations included the Gödel-Herbrand-Kleene recursive functions of 1930, 1934 and 1935, Alonzo Church's lambda calculus of 1936, Emil Post's "Formulation I" of 1936, and Alan Turing's Turing machines of 1936–7 and 1939. No generally accepted formal definition of "algorithm" exists yet. An informal definition could be "an algorithm is a computer program that calculates something." For some people, a program is only an algorithm if it stops eventually. For others, a program is only an algorithm if it stops before a given number of calculation steps.

1. Measure inbound links to ascertain link popularity
November 12, 2008
There has been much hype and conversation around the link popularity, but a lot of it is related to getting effective inbound links. The idea behind link popularity is based on the ranking algorithm of various search engines. To determine the ranking of WebPages, search engines simply count the number of links pointing to a website and that is called Inbound Linking. However, few search engines give more weight age to the links coming from significant pages. Therefore, more and more inbound links, is not the only factor which affects the link popularity, it also includes the quality and releva... (read more)

2. Will Google Ever Stop Counting Links?
November 10, 2008
A large part of the Google ranking algorithm is based on links as a link to your website from a related website is like a vote for your website which will help your website ranking for particular keyphrases. However will Google ever change this and develop a system based on other factors. In this article we will discuss if this will ever change and what the changes might be. If Google did stop using links how would it determine websites strength? In cryptography, encryption is the process of transforming information (referred to as plain text) using an algorithm (called cipher) to make it unreadable to anyone except those possessing special knowledge, usually referred to as a key. The result of the process is encrypted information (in cryptography, referred to as cipher text). In many contexts, the word encryption also implicitly refers to the reverse process, decryption (e.g. "software for encryption" can typically also perform decryption), to make the encrypted information readable again (i.e. to make it unencrypted).

14. Google's algorithm (or close to it)
September 02, 2008
First of all, the algorithm is the mathematical formula that Google uses to decide which website goes first. Knowing this formula would be of great value, as it would make our web positioning job easier, but it is a very well kept technical secret.
I have been collecting clues on the algorithm for a while, and running some quiet experiments. The latest non-official disclosure of the algorithm is from Rand Fish, in his seomoz.org site, obviously very well positioned under the SEO keyword. The article’s name is “A little piece of the Google algorithm revealed”.
And the formula is:

Often those who have signed up for AdSense soon find out that the ads displayed often make no sense. You would think that with the AdSence and it’s spider bot, that it would have a better artificial intelligence algorithm to read those pages for appropriate content.
Of course if you do not properly title, key word and set your pages then AdSense will not work right for you. If the program displays irrelevant ads, then no one will click on them and of course you make no money right?
Some website operators think that AdSense only takes into consideration the front page of your entire s... (read more)

22. Role of SEO in Baidu
August 22, 2008
Baidu is most popular search engine in China. Google China is second to Baidu. Lots of Internet marketers in the West do not know much about Baidu, and assume its’ ranking algorithm is similar to Google China. It is purely based on the assumption that when it can beat Google in a large market, its’ ranking algorithm should be comparable to Google. Unfortunately, it is wrong. Baidu’s search result is mixed up with lots of paid links and natural links. It is difficult to distinguish them. In addition, the natural ranking algorithm is not very sophisticated and many spamming and illogical... (read more)
