2. US Downplays Talk of Sudan Breakthrough

The State Department Monday downplayed talk of an early normalization of U.S. relations with Sudan despite an assertion by the country's foreign minister that full ties would be restored within six months. President Bush's new envoy for Sudan, Richard Williamson is paying his first visit to Sudan. VOA's David Gollust reports from the State Department.
The State Department appears to be ruling out quick action on restoring full ties with Sudan, despite a comment by the country's foreign minister Monday that this would occur within four to six months.

3. Rice Says Global Action Needed to End Darfur Conflict

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice says ending the Darfur conflict will require concerted international pressure on Khartoum from among others, China and the Arab states. Rice met Tuesday with Sudan's Foreign Minister Deng Alor. VOA's David Gollust reports from the State Department.
Rice is pledging a continuing intensive U.S. commitment to peace in Darfur but says it will take more than unilateral American diplomacy to end a conflict she says has genocidal tendencies and has lately spilled over into neighboring Chad.
