The Alps ( French Alpes; German Alpen; Italian Alpi; Romansh Alps; Slovene Alpe) is the name for one of the great mountain range systems of Europe, stretching from Austria and Slovenia in the east, through Italy, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Germany to France in the west. The word "Alps" was taken via French from Latin Alpes (meaning "the Alps"), which may be influenced by the Latin words albus (white) or altus (high) or more likely a Latin rendering of a Celtic or Ligurian original. The highest mountain in the Alps is Mont Blanc, at 4,808&_160;metres (15,774&_160;ft), on the Italian-French border. All the main peaks of the Alps can be found in the list of mountains of the Alps and list of Alpine peaks by prominence. The Alps are generally divided into the Western Alps and the Eastern Alps. The division is along the line between Lake Constance and Lake Como, following the Rhine. The Western Alps are higher, but their central chain is shorter and curved; they are located in Italy, France and Switzerland. The Eastern Alps (main ridge system elongated and broad) belong to Austria, Germany, Italy, Liechtenstein, Slovenia and Switzerland. The highest peak of the Western Alps is Mont Blanc, at 4,808&_160;metres (15,774&_160;ft). The highest peak of the Eastern Alps is Piz Bernina, at 4,049&_160;metres (13,284&_160;ft). The Dufourspitze, 4,634&_160;metres (15,203&_160;ft) and Ortler[1], 3,905&_160;metres (12,812&_160;ft), are respectively the second.

November 20, 2008
Essentially, La Thuile is in the Aosta Valley, with France, Switzerland and the Piedmont (one of the twenty regions of Italy), bordering to the west, north and southeast respectively. This valley is so unique—especially as it lies midway in the Alps—because it has the least population (and a lesser density of people) of all twenty Italian regions. Down near the valley lowlands, some towns speak French and even German as their first languages. The skiing, too, is just as diverse as the people who inhabit the region.

21. Moelltal Glacier Ski Resort: Romance at the Summit
October 02, 2008
This is not a mountain slope skiing resort. It is not an Alps skiing resort. It is a glacier skiing resort in which snow cover is complemented by another glacier, the Stubai. This means that during winter, the almost 6 miles of ski runs will have an excellent cover of snow, as well as six feet of snow base. But the snow cover, the snow base, and their pristine white landscape are not the reasons why the new ski resort of Moelltal Glacier is considered a very romantic ski resort. The romance is found at the summit.
The summit of the new ski resort of Moelltal Glacier is located at about 2 ... (read more)

23. Les 2 Alpes, France: From Schools To Slopes
September 22, 2008
Les 2 Alpes translates in English as The Two Alps; however, the "2" here refers to the two smaller towns to the north and south, Mont De Lans and Venosc. Les 2 Alpes is popular for two reasons: 1) It is lucky enough to have Europe's largest glacier, Mont-de-Lans. It is ski-friendly because it provides open spaces for skiers. 2) Les 2 Alpes comes second to Chamonix as France's oldest ski resorts. Just because it comes as a close second, however, shouldn't take away from its grandeur.

25. Where Does Italian Food History Begin?
September 08, 2008
Italy is one of the oldest countries in the world, and thanks to the geographical boundaries of the Mediterranean Sea and the Alps it has remained largely unchanged throughout history. Even during the Roman Empire, Italy was set apart. Legions that had been abroad always knew when they had returned to the mother country. Italian food history, however, reaches far beyond the country's borders.
For starters, look at pasta. There is much historical debate on its origins, but many historians point to Marco Polo's voyages to the Far East, from which he returned with all manner of foreign spice... (read more)
