Orthography Fiction English is the most common language in the United States. Though the U.S. federal government has no official language, English is considered the de facto, "in practice but not necessarily ordained by law", language of the United States because of its widespread use. English has been given official status by 30 of the 50 state governments.[3] The use of English in the United States was inherited from British colonization. The first wave of English-speaking settlers arrived in North America in the 17th century. During that time, there were also speakers in North America of Spanish, French, Dutch, German, Norwegian, Swedish, Scots, Welsh, Irish, Scottish Gaelic, Finnish, Russian (Alaska) and numerous Native American languages.

This means that trying to reach people through Traditional media can be difficult since there are Thai, English and Japanese newspapers here and radio stations in Thai, English and Chinese. November 19, 2009
History shows that America is a nation of immigrants. Unless you or your ancestors are Native American, if you live in America you or your ancestors are immigrants. My grandparents were immigrants. My grandparents came to America from Russia, from a city near the border with Poland, prior to World War I. They came to America to escape German occupation, religious persecution, and death. My grandparents, Harry and Anna, landed at Ellis Island in New York. They spoke no English. They had no education. They had no money. They were among the poor, the tired, the huddled masses, yearning to ... (read more)

6. What Makes Classic Books?
November 19, 2009
A classic is, “Something that everybody wants to have read and nobody wants to read," or so said Mark Twain. What characterizes a classic work of fiction? Is it determined by the number of printings the book has undergone? Is it a classic because it has been translated into many languages? Is it called a classic because some distinguished soul said it is a classic? Though these are interesting to note, they do not determine a work is classic.
A classic first is timely. This means that it is often an influence on, or, at least, an expression of the times when it was written. Uncle To... (read more)
