2. Origin of Gumbo
October 29, 2009
Gumbo is a stew or soup originating in Louisiana which is for the most part popular across the Gulf Coast and southern portion of the United States. Having originated in New Orleans, Louisiana, basically named by the French, gumbo is the product of the melting of cultures in Louisiana history. The dish itself is based on the French soup bouillabaisse, added with the "Holy Trinity," (celery, onions and green peppers) which is of Spanish origin and the use of file' powder (ground sassafras leaves) which is a Native American contribution of the Choctaw Indians. Last, but not least, African slave... (read more)

Latin American music is the music of all countries in Latin America and comes in many varieties. Colombian music can be divided into four musical zones: The Atlantic coast, the Pacific coast, the Andean region and Los Llanos. The Caribbean music vibrates with hot rhythms, such as the cumbia, porros and mapale. The music from the Pacific coast, such as the currulao, with a strong use of drums, is tinged with Spanish influence. Music of the Colombian Andes has been strongly influenced by Spanish rhythms and instruments, and differs noticeably from the Indian music of Peru or Bolivia. Among the ... (read more)

4. All About Patios
October 22, 2009
A patio is a paved lawn adjacent to your house that you can often use for small parties, dining or other recreational activities. The word derives its origin from Spanish language where ‘patio’ means back garden or backyard. In Spanish styles patios, it is the paved area between a residence and garden that is uncovered or roofless. However, in Australia the word patio often denotes a small adjacent balcony or veranda to the house.

5. Potatoes: The Inca's gift to the world
October 04, 2009
Potatoes: The Inca’s gift to the world America’s lasting gift to the world, the potato feeds people all over the planet. Following the discovery of the New World, Spanish plundered the palaces, and their Galleons carried off gold and silver by the ton, but that was only money. The foods they took from Native American farmers would ultimately feed the world. Where would we be without corn, or chocolate, or potatoes? Potatoes originated in the Andes Mountains of Peru, and had been cultivated by the Incas since around 5000 BCE. The Spanish brought them back to Europe where they were met... (read more)

7. Tapped t's in American English Pronunciation
October 02, 2009
One of the features that distinguish American English pronunciation from some other types of English pronunciation is the use of the so-called “tapped” t or d. This English sound is called an alveolar tap (also alveolar flap) by linguists, and corresponds to an r sound in many languages, such as the non-trilled r in Spanish and Italian, or the standard r sound in Arabic or Finnish. The general rule in American English pronunciation for whether a t or d is tapped says that these sounds should be tapped when they come after a stressed syllable, such as in ‘butter’ or ‘lady’. In both of the words... (read more)

8. Why Learn Spanish?
September 29, 2009
Why learn Spanish of all languages? Why not Italian, French, or even Russian, because it seems to be the most practical language to have these days living in the US. With an ever-expanding Latin American population, being able to speak a language that is becoming so widely used would be an invaluable asset. Schools are even becoming bi-lingual and Spanish is stressed. There are even parts of the country; Miami springs to mind, where there are most likely more people for whom Spanish is their first language than there are people who are native English speakers.
Even outside of the state... (read more)

9. Writing For Free Pays!
September 27, 2009
I am pleased to announce that because of the existence of the American Chronicle, and the kind tolerance of its editorial staff, particularly Peter who has had to endure a lot regarding yours truly, I have been noticed by a travel guide publisher. Because I was permitted to send in article after article to this online publication, I am able to take on some bigger, paid gigs.
The way this works is that you write, a lot, and send your stuff into the American Chronicle for no pay. Hopefully, you write something that people actually want to read and, on occasion, respond to. The guys and gals... (read more)

11. Learning Spanish: Financing Your Spanish Education
September 25, 2009
A couple of years ago, an American lady came to Guanajuato to learn Spanish. She enrolled in one of the most expensive schools in town. This school is good, by the way, and I always recommend it to people who want to come study Spanish in Guanajuato. This poor woman was a rank beginner. When she arrived, she was put in a class commensurate with her level; only the class was in the middle of the beginning class cycle.
In other words, when you enroll in a local, private Spanish school, you may not be put into a class that is exactly at the level at which you tested. If you are a rank beginn... (read more)

15. Slavery in the USA
September 24, 2009
Spanish settlements in the territory of the current-day USA owned slaves as early as 1526. Twenty one African chattel slaves were first brought to British North America ( to Jamestown, Virginia) in 1619. They joined white indentured laborers (servants) from all over Europe as well as Indian (Native-American) and Caribbean slaves. All the colonies legalized race-based (black) slavery and introduced "slave codes" by 1670. In total, 10-13 million Africans were abducted (mainly by other Africans and Arabs) and sold as slaves (mostly in the Americas) between 1620 and 1880.
The slaves were trans... (read more)

16. Are Illegal Mexicans Really Bad For America?
September 23, 2009
I’ve been thinking again. I know some of my readers regard that as a dangerous thing. For instance, the guy who ended his last letter to me with a “your hypocrisy knows no bounds”. I get these sorts of letters all the time.
But, I have been thinking and, of course, I have been thinking about America’s obsession with shutting down the Mexican-American border. You would wonder why I don’t tire of this rhetoric and the reason is simple. America needs the likes of your humble and gracious columnist reminding them to get out of that box of uncritical thinking and untested assumptions.
So ... (read more)
