Analogy is both the cognitive process of transferring information from a particular subject (the analogue or source) to another particular subject (the target), and a linguistic expression corresponding to such a process. In a narrower sense, analogy is an inference or an argument from one particular to another particular, as opposed to deduction, induction, and abduction, where at least one of the premises or the conclusion is general. The word analogy can also refer to the relation between the source and the target themselves, which is often, though not necessarily, a similarity, as in the biological notion of analogy. Analogy plays a significant role in problem solving, decision making, perception, memory, creativity, emotion, explanation and communication. It lies behind basic tasks such as the identification of places, objects and people, for example, in face perception and facial recognition systems. It has been argued that analogy is "the core of cognition" (Hofstadter in Gentner et al. 2001).
Specific analogical language comprises exemplification, comparisons, metaphors, similes, allegories, and parables, but not metonymy. Phrases like and so on, and the like, as if, and the very word like also rely on an analogical understanding by the receiver of a message including them. Analogy is important not only in ordinary language and common sense, where proverbs and idioms give many examples of its application, but also in science, philosophy and the humanities. The concepts of association, comparison, correspondence, mathematical and morphological homology, homomorphism, iconicity, isomorphism, metaphor, resemblance, and similarity are closely related to analogy. In cognitive linguistics, the notion of conceptual metaphor may be equivalent to that of analogy. Analogy has been studied and discussed since classical antiquity by philosophers, scientists and lawyers. The last few decades have shown a renewed interest in analogy, most notable in cognitive science. With respect to the terms source and target there are two distinct traditions of usage

2. A Great Website Design Equals Your Own Money Tree!
November 21, 2008
It is very simple to make money online, well in theory it is simple. If you understand how to setup an effective website and how to do SEO that actually gets you ranked under keywords that people actually search for, then you have setup your own little money tree. The analogy of using a tree is actually a great one, because just like with a tree you will need to sow the seed, take care of it and be patient while it grows and starts bearing fruit. Building a website is just like planting a tree; you need to make sure you get the basics right. The right soil, the right amount of water, ferti... (read more)

3. Real Time Reporting Software in Todays Business
November 21, 2008
A dam Breaks and a town is wiped off the map. The towns mayor and his assistant go up to the site of the broken dam to look around. After taking in the scene, the mayors assistant turns to the mayer and proclaims that he knows what the problem was. “The Dam had a crack in it”.
Information is Good – Real Time Information is Better
Common sense would tell you that the time to find out about the crack was long before the dam broke and the same analogy can apply to todays fast paced business environment. Knowing what trends are, as soon as possible can not only allow a business to capita... (read more)

4. Why Build a Landing Page?
November 21, 2008
If you are an individual or business owner who has a product to sell or promote, a landing page is essential. Also, if you want to gather contact information for prospective clients, you will need a landing page of some kind. Imagine you have spent money for advertising, and taken time and energy to build links, and you drive traffic to your site, but there is nothing there to greet the visitors to your site, and to lead them through the buying process, or information gathering process that is vital to your business.
Here is an analogy that might help to clarify why a landing page is im... (read more)

5. Interracial Marriage: Is it trickier than same race marriage?
November 03, 2008
Most people usually have the notion that interracial marriage is one of the hardest things to sustain and feel that they have a higher chance of ending in than a same race marriage. Is this a bright analogy? I beg to differ. Looking at statistics, a large number of divorces in the US are of same race marriages. I am sure you are now arguing that it’s because there are more same race marriages than interracial marriages. True. Well, let us look at this closely by comparing the potential problems stemming from an interracial marriage and matching them up to same race marriage. In an interra... (read more)

6. Executive Coaching - the Importance of Being in Flow
October 30, 2008
This discussion focuses on the concept of flow and its role in the executive coaching process. This concept albeit an ancient one, is unused in most executive coaching programs primarily because its application is not fully understood. This article identifies what flow is and provides practical techniques for integration into the executive coaching process.
I once heard a great analogy for the human experience that most executive coaching professionals will identify with. It compares us to a spring coil. The natural state of a spring coil is when it’s fully distended. When its compressed ... (read more)

8. How to Improve Your Intimate Relationship Pt 2
October 13, 2008
In the higher love relationships each partner respects the right of the other to love as many people as they want, in any way they choose. They allow the other to love as they feel compelled, respecting their right to free choice. In a higher love relationship, love shared does not equate with less love from your partner. Let's take the analogy of parental love for a second-born child. I remember just before my second child was born, asking myself, how will I ever be able to love this second child as much as I love my firstborn? But when I eventually held my second child in my arms, t... (read more)

9. Undrinkable Water
October 13, 2008
I've been thinking recently ever since my time in Pensacola, FL of an analogy that has stuck with me ever since seeing something while there.
For those of you who don't me know-or at least not well-I am all about practical jokes. In fact, on a weekly basis one or two of my roommates were the victim of some kind of funny prank on my part, and usually with my third roommate's collaboration when we all lived together during my second year in Bible school. That easily was my funnest living arrangement or at least the house was the best house I've lived in.
We did it all-put pennies on Ar... (read more)

October 02, 2008
How are we going to have the proper making up relationships and improve the self-development together?
Let me give you an analogy of a human being. A human being has to go through many different stages from young, when he or she is a little boy or girl, growing up, transforming himself or herself to another type of mature guy and women who are much different in the past. Therefore, what I like to share for this point is that we are growing and improve ourselves to have the proper self personal development growth. 11. Resume Writing Tips - How To Impress Prospective Employers
September 17, 2008
When the idea of this article came in to my mind, I decided to start with an analogy. When you go for shopping and see different types of products in the racks, do you understand how helpful the products could be? Can you guess the functionalities of a specific product unless you go through the brochure or the user-manual? Once you are impressed with the description written in the product page, you take more interest in the product.

12. Ten Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Writing Workshop
September 08, 2008
#1. Buy and read your teacher's book. (Analogy: would you let a carpenter whose work you've never seen remodel your kitchen?)
#2. Ask him or her to autograph it. (An autographed first edition hardcover can be surprisingly valuable! And: flattery never hurts! Don't be shy about asking for an autograph; authors love this, they really do.)
#3. Expect to learn. (Analogy: do carpenters learn their craft wholly on their own? Maybe what you'll learn is that this is a writing teacher to avoid. Certainly, this is much cheaper experience than having a bad carpenter mess with your kit... (read more)

13. Why Run a Background Check?
September 08, 2008
Mainly because doing a business involves plenty of risks and the fact that business itself is a risk, making better insulations to prevent losses from different factors is nevertheless important. Since business does not just involve capital in a form of monetary unit but as well as capital in a form of manpower. In a simple analogy, the people involved in the business are the ones to be considered major players and the money is just the equipment of the game. Losses in business can be deemed made by factors primarily rooted to human error or simply natural causes. Though losses can be mo... (read more)

15. The Key To A Well-Behaved Dog Is To Become A Role Model Yourself
September 02, 2008
It has always amazed me how dogs are so closely related to their ancestors, the wolf, and still, to this day, display a natural instinct to live and participate within a family "pack".
Teamwork and partnerships are the natural order in which canines think. A good analogy to explain this better is to observe the way a sports team all works together to accomplish the same goal of winning. Your dog is the same way and looks at you and the rest of his family as part of his "team". He counts on everyone of you in the house to teach him how to behave, understand the rules, and above all, help ... (read more)

16. Products selling on Ebay is easy
August 24, 2008
Everyone knows selling on Ebay is easy, but not many people know what products to sell, or where to get them! That is the prime reason why many ebay sellers are not making a whole lot of money on Ebay. Knowing what sells hot on eBay much before you ordered stocks for the season would see you making lots of money. If you can draw an analogy with an offline garments stores you would wonder how shop owners preorder their merchandise at least six months in advance and still be able to accurately predict the fashion of the day. 17. What in the World does Madonna Have to Do With Search Engine Marketing?
August 20, 2008
Well, at first glance, probably not much. Stay with me for a few moments, and I think the analogy will become clear.
For those new to marketing websites, the amount of information out there on SEO, SEM and the like can be quite overwhelming. How can you possibly keep up with all of it or know who to listen to?
Well, in my own experience, I tried to do as much research as possible on the so-called proven tactics, as well as the trends of the day. I decided to try to do all of the grunt work myself. I wanted to try as many of the different techniques I had seen without spending any cas... (read more)

18. Female Attraction Road Blocks and Land Mines
August 04, 2008
I once heard an analogy that that really made my mind twist up as I tried over and over to disprove (to no avail.) Some guy was talking about trees and cars, and he covered his point well by stating that almost all the cars involved in single car accidents that veer off the road end up wrapped around a tree. He asked us why and of course we all sat there with blank stares on our faces. “It’s simple,” he explained, “Whatever you’re looking at, you’re going to hit.” It’s true. When we look directly at one particular area, whether it’s because we want to hit or because we don’t want to hit it, it... (read more)

20. The Wheel of Renewal - Your Unique Journey to Passion and Success
July 31, 2008
I often use the analogy of archeology at times while coaching. I've created The Wheel of Renewal, which emphasizes the idea of archeology. Imagine you're in your own Indiana Jones movie called Indiana Jones and The Wheel of Renewal - Journey to Passion. Though the wheel is naturally a circle, the journey is not like "clock work" but rather a flexible process. We start where we are. We may find ourselves at various times at different parts of our lives; reflecting back, learning how to stay present as well as looking towards our future possibilities.
Part of anyone's growth is to look back... (read more)

Art on the Internet is the cultural reproduction of artistic merit, where the internet primarily serves as a medium for the artists to display their work. An Online art gallery may seem to be an analogy to video art or something akin, but there is a major line of distinction between the two, as video art primarily uses video as its medium.
Online Art Gallery is a means to exhibit the artistic talent of numerous talented artistes, who otherwise go unsung in the crowd, as not everybody can manage to bask in the limelight. A form of display of art, most net artists perceive the Internet as a... (read more)

I recently returned from an Unlimited Breath Intensive Workshop, ten days where I learned how breathing fully is essential to living a vibrant, healthy, and successful life, in the same way as good driving skills are necessary to keep one’s car cruising. I feel I have stepped into the driver’s seat of my life and I’m taking off.

25. Debt, Domino and your short term cash advance loans
July 08, 2008
Have you heard about Domino effect? It is one of the basic economics of life. This effect relates to a chain of events that arises from a small change of day to day life. The requirements of day to day life sometimes compel people to witness the Domino Effect.
