Andalusia ( Spanish Andalucía, Arabic Al-Andalus (???????)? is an autonomous community of Spain. It is the most populous and the second largest, in terms of land area, of the seventeen autonomous communities of the Kingdom of Spain. Its capital and largest city is Seville. The region is divided into eight provinces Huelva, Seville, Cádiz, Córdoba, Málaga, Jaén, Granada and Almería. Andalusia is located south of the autonomous communities of Extremadura and Castile-La Mancha; west of the autonomous community of Murcia and the Mediterranean Sea; east of Portugal and the Atlantic Ocean; and north of the Mediterranean Sea, the Strait of Gibraltar, which separates Spain from Morocco, and the Atlantic Ocean. The small British overseas territory of Gibraltar shares a three-quarter-mile land border with the Andalusian province of Cádiz at the eastern end of the Strait of Gibraltar. With the fall of the Phoenician cities, Carthage became the dominant sea power of the western Mediterranean and the most important trading partner for the Semitic towns along the Andalusian coast. Between the first and second Carthaginian wars, Carthage extended its control beyond Andalusia to include all of Iberia except the Basquelands. Andalusia was the major staging ground for the war with Rome led by the Barkid Hannibal. The Romans defeated the Carthaginians and conquered Andalusia, the region being renamed Baetica. The Vandals moved briefly through the region during the 5th century AD before settling in North Africa, after which the region fell into the hands of the Kingdom of the Visigoths who had to face the Byzantine interests in the region.

Almeria is set within a desert-like landscape which is a feature of this part of Andalucia. The hosting of the 2005 Mediterranean Games in Almeria has also helped to put the city back on the map. Today Almeria has a relaxed atmosphere, despite the heavy traffi... (read more)

My first few weeks in south Africa to publicize my children's book were spent in a state of extreme culture shock. Nothing was as I had been led to believe - not even the weather. It was winter in Andalucia, Spain when I left for what was supposed to be mid-summer in South Africa. The first few days were so cold I ended up wearing the same winter clothes I had arrived in. And it rained and rained and rained.
Though I had lived and worked in West Africa I knew that South Africa was very different. One of my misconceptions was that I would be able to take public transport and travel around ... (read more)

With sun, sea, nightlife and golf, the Costa del Sol has something to appeal to all British holidaymakers. Only two hours away by plane, it’s a world away from the cold, miserable summers we endure in the UK.
The Costa del Sol runs along Spain’s Mediterranean south coast, from Huelva in the west to the region of Almeria in the east. The land region here is called Andalucia, but the coast is the “Coast of the sun”.
No wonder it is called that; with sun virtually guaranteed in the summer months, it has become a magnet for British holidaymakers in the past 30 years. Sadly in the 70s i... (read more)
