1. Title: Sidewalk Signs - Seven Tips for Attention-Grabbing Sidewalk Sign Messages
February 03, 2009
Sidewalk signs are moveable signs supported by their own frame and most often formed in the cross-sectional shape of an "A". A sidewalk sign can be a very effective form of outdoor advertising for small businesses, particularly in high-traffic areas, if your message attracts the right attention.
You need to keep your sidewalk signs simple to be effective. You only have seven lines of four inch letters on a typical sidewalk sign, and research has shown that you have typically less than 3 seconds for a potential customer to read your message.

2. Words That Count In Your Brochures
February 03, 2009
It’s not just the design that matters when you create your brochure printing. Your words and content give the substance to an otherwise picture full of pages. Your text is what gives your color brochure printing depth because it provides the most important element in your ad – your message.
Have you ever wondered how many words are appropriate to your brochure printing? What’s the maximum word count in every page? Or what about the content of your brochure? What words do you need to say your message?
For a standard four-panel color brochure printing for example, perhaps the maximum ... (read more)

3. Why Electronic Gifts Ruined My Holidays: Case In Point The Electronic Postcard
February 03, 2009
Did you receive all those electronic greeting cards and postcards this past holiday season? What happened huh? I remember the days of “physical” postcard printing where I actually had something to hold on to (and probably cry with joy about). The postcard print has been replaced by this hi-tech but otherwise impersonal monstrosity that is the electronic postcard. Even my grandmother sent me one (which was actually cool but that is beside the point). Electronic postcards have ruined the holidays for me. Having family and friends all over the world, it is nice to get some actual mails or print p... (read more)

6. Are You Giving Up Too Soon?
January 30, 2009
After giving a marketing presentation to a group of financial advisors, one of their very best from British Columbia got up on stage and proceeded to lay out the key strategies he believed attributed to his success. "Know Your Profitable Client, Provide Exceptional Service, Always Follow Up," he said. I sat there enjoying this live example of what marketing can do for a company or professional...when out it came. He said "Remember, 50% of our results come from the last 10% of our efforts." You would think someone had just given me the hottest new book to read! It was such a powerful way ... (read more)

7. Branding for Businesses of All Sizes
January 30, 2009
Think for a moment of the most memorable advertising campaign you can recall. Perhaps it is a childhood memory, such as the Ronald McDonald clown doing magic tricks for children. Perhaps the first ad that comes to mind for you is the man in glasses walking around asking if you can hear him now. These images work because they are brands for the product being advertised. Ronald McDonald is a nearly universal symbol for the McDonald’s empire, and no child in America is unfamiliar with the happy face of the yellow and red clown.
A brand is something that helps your potential customers and cli... (read more)

10. Business Card Marketing
January 30, 2009
Business Card or Marketing Tool? Do you have a box of business cards on your desk that you hardly seem to put a dent in before the information changes and a new box is ordered? Or worse yet...are you still working on that same box of business cards that you printed 3 years ago! Business cards can be a great inexpensive marketing tool for a small business. They say exactly what you do and give people all the contact information they need to get a hold of you. Yet oddly enough we tend to use them only for networking, and even then, we aren't really sure if people are holding on to th... (read more)

11. Creating Powerful, Promotional Material on a Budget
January 30, 2009
Nothing saddens me more when I'm out at an event or opening my mail than seeing BRUTAL (that's right, BRUTAL) promotional material. Let me describe it. First, like something out of a horror movie, I find myself staring at a home made business card or worse, the tri-fold brochure (start the creepy music). At the top is what can only be described as an abhoration (spell-check doesn't like this word, but I do) that is supposed to be a logo (enter the hallowing scream), that was obviously developed by a 5 year old (correction a 5 year old could probably have done better). Next I see so many fonts ... (read more)

12. What is Social Media Marketing?
January 30, 2009
The key with social media is a bit like your holidays vs. work days. A nice balance can make a world of difference. Too much will keep you hiding behind a computer and too little - well chances are you won't know what you are missing out on! As a marketer, I find this topic overwhelms and confuses many business owners. Quite frankly, even in the marketing world - the jury is still out on the trends. But rest assured - social media is not going away. As our children grow up and take over corporate North America, the names of the tools may change, but the overall usage will only become more ... 13. Beware of the Numbers Game
January 30, 2009
If any of you have ever been so lucky to attend a multi-level presentation or even better a pyramid scheme, you are well aware of the Numbers Game. I always think about it when I recall an old Faberge Shampoo commercial where a women "tells 2 friends and they tell 2 friends and so on and so on and so on". A lot of times with referrals we think that if we have this base of clients and they can refer us, then we will have more clients who will refer us and so on and so on too. But you know this isn't what really happens in your business, does it? If you think about where your referrals hav... (read more)

14. Balancing Your Marketing Portfolio
January 30, 2009
So you have some money to spend on marketing. The big question is, how do you know what to spend it on to minimize risk and maximize return? The answer is through your balanced marketing portfolio. We all understand the importance of having a balanced financial portfolio, but what about our marketing portfolio? If we invest the bulk of our marketing in limited activities, we are putting ourselves at risk of achieving a less than desirable return on our investment. While in finance we want to balance risk and return, in marketing we want to balance 3 crucial elements – control, cost ... (read more)

15. Are You Guilty of One-Dimensional Marketing?
January 29, 2009
Here’s a bold statement. There is no such thing as a bad marketing tool, just bad planning. You can choose skywriting, bus benches, TV or the web and it CAN work, if you know the buying patterns of your ideal client and you don’t fall victim to what I call one-dimensional marketing. Whenever we start working with clients on building a small business marketing system, we go through a period of discovery. During this phase, one question we like to ask is what the client has done to date in the way of marketing. A common answer goes something like this, “well we tried sending out postcar... (read more)

Tom Cruise, Will Smith, Julia Roberts, Russel Crowe – all big names. But do you ever wonder why movie celebrities have fame, power and fortune? Because movies are big business.
Making movies and selling them is business. As a business, movies have to be a hit in the box office.
