3. UK Red Diesel - Duty Collection from 1st November 2008

HRMC clarified the way in which additional fuel duty is to be collected from the 1st November 2008, at the Southampton Boat Show. It will affect private pleasure craft owners when purchasing red diesel for propulsion and to a lesser extent when purchasing red diesel for heating. How will it work? Private pleasure craft owners will be able to continue to use marine red diesel for propulsion use, but at a modified duty rate. The River Thames in London is tidal from Teddington through the city and down to the mouth where it enters the sea. The tide rises and falls due to the rotation of the earth and gravitational pull of the moon. Very basically the water wants to stay at the closest point to the moon and as the World moves this causes the water to appear to move creating a tidal flow. 7. Early History Of The Marine Diesel Engine And Application

The first mention of a fast running marine diesel is in 1903 on the Marne-Rhine canal when a French built canal barge named “Petit Pierre” sailed, producing 25bhp at 360 rpm. In 1904 two marine diesel engines combined were being used in a French submarine ‘Z’ 120bhp.Then in 1905 another French diesel submarine the ‘Aigrette’ with a more conventional 4 stroke engine produced 200 bhp was launched.
