1. How to Write a Children's Picture Book
February 28, 2007

If you are a parent or grandparent with young children around, you’ve probably read so many children’s picture books, and they look so simple to write, that you think, “I can do that.” But what you may not realize is that hidden in the most popular children’s picture books are structures that give shape to the story just like a hanger gives shape to a shirt. If you want to write a successful children’s picture book, you need to know what these structures are and how to incorporate them into your own writing. Let’s look at the most common structure in picture storybooks, called by the $25 ... (read more)

2. Get An Edge - Plan Well Ahead
February 08, 2007

If you are writing to sell to magazines or newspapers, then you have to do some time travel. That's right - you must think ahead! Publishers of magazines have to map out each issue well ahead of time and need to choose the best eye catching articles received well in advance of publication. Your plan should be to decide on a subject or topic at least six months ahead of time, research and write an interesting article, then submit it to the publication three months in advance. I don't think it is. I reckon you should first of all write about what you ENJOY. Write about what you are enthusiastic about and would like to read about yourself. All the information you need to KNOW can be found with research. The library, your own bookshelf, the Internet (if you're careful), interviewing. Get a handle on what gives you a lift first. Think about a subject that satisfies ... (read more)

February 03, 2007

If there's one thing that gets me miffed it's when ideas for a new story or article seem to dry up. So I came up with this technique that can spark ideas into life pretty quickly, and it's fun too! You simply think of a common phrase or colloquialism and do some quick, actually very quick, research using a good dictionary, encyclopedia, or possibly Wikipedia on the net. Any source to track down the origin of the phrase or the variations on the word. Take the word 'fire'. A fairly ordinary word, but applying this technique I soon came up with the following: Did ... 5. Audio Ideas For 2007
January 04, 2007

It’s a New Year and time for some new ideas for 2007! How about starting with a new message on your answering machine? To make one, start with a morphing program like AV Music Morpher Gold, or AV Voice Changer Diamond. Figure out what you want to say and then record it. If you’re using Morpher Gold then you can load and edit it by applying effects and filters. If you want to fool around as you record, and you want to hear the changes immediately, then Voice Changer is your choice, with its stereo duplex support and filtering in real time. Try adding depth and bass to your voice, or softe... (read more)
