The Arctic is the region around the Earth's North Pole, opposite the Antarctic region around the South Pole. The Arctic includes the Arctic Ocean (which overlies the North Pole) and parts of Canada, Greenland (a territory of Denmark), Russia, the United States ( Alaska), Iceland, Norway, Sweden and Finland. The word Arctic comes from the Greek word arktos (???t??) , which means bear. The name refers to the constellation Ursa Major, the "Great Bear", which dominates the northern region of the celestial sphere. [citation needed]There are numerous definitions of the Arctic region. The boundary is generally considered to be north of the Arctic Circle (66° 33’N), which is the approximate limit of the midnight sun and the polar night. Other definitions are based on climate and ecology, such as the 10°C (50°F) July isotherm, which roughly corresponds to the tree line in most of the Arctic. Socially and politically, the Arctic region includes the northern territories of the eight Arctic states, including Lapland, although by natural science definitions much of this territory is considered subarctic. The Arctic region consists of a vast ice-covered ocean (which is sometimes considered to be a northern arm of the Atlantic Ocean) surrounded by treeless, permafrost. In recent years the extent of the sea ice has declined, and there is some evidence suggesting Arctic water may be ice-free in summer. According to the Norwegian International Polar Year Secretariat and polar scientists, this ice cap may disappear over the summer of 2008[1] [2][3][4] [5]Life in the Arctic includes organisms living in the ice[citation needed], zooplankton and phytoplankton, fish and marine mammals, birds, land animals, plants, and human societies. The Arctic region is a unique area among Earth's ecosystems. The cultures in the region and the Arctic indigenous peoples have adapted to its cold and extreme conditions.

1. President Bush Declares That Offshore Drilling Will Save The Polar Bears
September 27, 2008
The President of the United States, alarmed at the prospect of polar bears drowning as they desperately search for melting icebergs, has ordered- as a purely humanitarian gesture- the implantation of sixteen thousand ExxonMobil oil rigs in the Arctic Ocean.
“This way the um ah polar critters will be um able to ah find sank sank sanctuary on oil rigs instead um them thar pesky ice cubes. We further shall arrange for extensive oil slicks to provide the critters with waterproof coatings.”
Fox news applauded the President’s initiative as “a further heroic step in the President’s mission ... (read more)

2. On The Move In Suffolk
September 23, 2008
Suffolk residents are on the move, and we’re talking about the feathered variety. Suffolk has an abundance of fantastic bird sanctuaries, Minsmere, Dunwich, Havergate Island, Wolves Wood. Landguard and Timley Marshes to name a few, and it’s this time of year where the residents are getting restless for their great migration south for the winter. Equally, we expect to play host to those seeking refuge in the UK from the cold Arctic winter. Migrant wading birds continue to pass through, including curlew sandpipers, little stints and ruffs. Winter wildfowl return, with teal numbers increasing rap... (read more)

3. Pros and cons of wind turbines, does it worth it?
September 08, 2008
In short: resounding yes. Many are against wind turbines and wind farm building, and I have to admit they have a few good reasons other than the stupid „I don’t like the look of wind mills in the countryside”. Well, I don’t like that the Arctic is getting smaller and smaller every day, and the fact that maybe my children won’t be able to experience the world as it is today. Letting go of the untouched view is a small sacrifice in exchange for nothing less than the whole future of Earth. Other than the panorama there are a few reasons why one wouldn’t choose wind turbines over regular electric... (read more)

4. Getting Away from it All
September 03, 2008
There is a lesser-known small island in the North Atlantic called Iceland where you can still get away from it all and experience nature in a near pristine state. That is just what I needed.
Iceland is a country roughly the size of Kentucky but with a lot fewer people. It is located a little below the Arctic Circle roughly between Greenland and the United Kingdom and about a 5-hour flight from the East coast of the US. It has a population of just over three hundred thousand people which means that the population density is very low.
Population numbers and geography aside, Iceland... (read more)

8. EXTREME ADVENTURE TRAVELER ALERT !
July 28, 2008
Antarctica was discovered in the 1800s, but ancient cultures, including the ancient Greeks, knew it existed. They did not know it in a scientific way; they just speculated that there had to be land at the far southern end of the world.
Some ancient cultures figured it had to exist as a way of balancing the weight of Europe and Africa. The ancient Greeks, who knew about the Arctic or North Pole, speculated there had to be an anti-North Pole or anti-Arctic. In fact, they gave Antarctica its name.
Famed explorer Captain Cook, better known for his more temperate discoveries in the South ... (read more)

10. A Canadian Arctic City - Trip To Iqaluit In Nunavut
July 24, 2008
In 2004, I completed two Inuit art buying trips to Iqaluit (formerly Frobisher Bay), the capital of Nunavut, Canada's newest territory. For both trips, I flew out of Ottawa on Canadian North airlines. The other airline that services Nunavut is First Air. Only the last half of the jets was allocated for passengers as the entire first half was for cargo. Being so remote, Canadian Arctic Inuit communities pretty well have to have everything shipped up there by plane or by boat during the summers since there are no roads connecting to the rest of Canada or even between each Nunavut community. The ... (read more)

11. Have You Heard Of The Siberian Husky?
July 09, 2008
Joe Redington, "Father of the Iditarod" looks over his supplies at the checkpoint. One arctic parka, one heavy sleeping bag, an ax, a pair of snowshoes, musher food and dog food, as well as dog boots to protect the feet of the Siberian Husky team. He concocts a strategy in his mind for when to feed the dogs their meals and when to feed them their snacks. Should he travel by day or travel by night? When and how much should they rest?
Every musher has a different technique, but unexpected blizzards, dog sicknesses, a slip into the icy river or losing the course could all threaten their tim... (read more)

16. Towards 2025 - With Fewer Glaciers and Less Arctic Ice
June 02, 2008
Many of the ice structures such as glaciers, ice in mountain areas, and the Arctic icecap are melting. Most of those structures will no longer be in existence within the next twenty years. Much of the Arctic ice has disappeared and many of the glaciers are shrinking. But with all these ice structures visibly melting, why are we not becoming more concerned about a future with almost no ice masses left on land? In fact, not many have given the consequences of these melting icecaps much thought at all.
The truth is that most people believe the present rate of melting ice mass is a natural e... (read more)

18. Ice The Price Of Climate Change
March 21, 2008
When you receive the Seal you will recognize climate change as the coming End-times. You will see what is happening in the Arctic--there is much less "perennial" sea ice now and it is being replaced by short-lived sea ice.
In the past 25 years much of the longer-lasting sea ice in the Arctic has melted. This includes ice that lasts for 2 to 5 years or even 6 years or more. Now there appears to be plenty of ice cover, but it is seasonal ice.
The seasonal ice lasts for about a year. It increases in the winter and melts away by the end of summer, so it lasts 1 year or less. N... (read more)

20. Siberian Husky Breeders And Rescue Centers
February 18, 2008
The history of the Siberian Husky is similar to that of other members of the Spitz group such as the Chow Chow and Pomeranian. This breed descended from Arctic sled dogs and was purebred in an isolated area of Siberia for hundreds of years. An Eskimo Siberian Husky breeder selected the most attractive and brightest-eyed huskies for breeding. This may be why the Siberian Husky so closely resembles the wolf, even though it is no closer related to wolves than other dog breeds. These dogs, along with the Alaskan Malamute and Samoyed, are directly descended from the Eskimo dog and have been utilize... (read more)

23. Raising Purebreds: Siberian Husky Breeders
February 11, 2008
Siberian Huskies descend from the Eskimo dog which was a sledding dog used by the Inuit tribe in the Arctic regions of Greenland, Alaska and Canada. The Inuit tribe bred the most handsome, bright-eyed huskies and relied on their dogs heavily as pack animals, guard dogs and hunting companions. The Siberian Husky was purebred in Siberia for hundreds of years and was exported to Alaska in 1909 to use for sled-racing. Today's Siberian Huskies are bred to retain the strong bodies, bright eyes and intelligence that the Inuit valued. The American Kennel Club recognized the Siberian Husky as a breed i... (read more)

25. Expanding Your Professional Horizons with Oil and Gas Jobs
January 18, 2008
Many people assume that oil and gas jobs are limited to the rough and tumble tedium of remote locations. Oil and gas reserves found in deserts, arctic environments and forests provide a challenge for a significant number of experts in oil and gas. Professionals overlook oil and gas jobs in favour of safer jobs where the pay rate is roughly equivalent. It is important for professionals of all experience levels to understand that oil and gas jobs are not strictly relegated to the uninhabitable parts of the globe.
