Type in a word or phrase to search, you can also type in Article ID's separated by commas:

The arts is a broad subdivision of culture, composed of many expressive disciplines. It is a broader term than "art", which as a description of a field usually means only the visual arts[1] (comprising fine art, decorative art, architecture and crafts). The arts encompasses visual arts, literature, the performing arts, including music, drama, film, dance, related media, and by some definitions, other areas such as fashion.[2] A more complete list is given below. There are many more disciplines that are not listed above. The aforementioned are the major arts.

A good definition of the arts is given by the Free Dictionary as "imaginative, creative, and nonscientific branches of knowledge considered collectively, esp as studied academically".[3] This definition does not specify the various disciplines that could be considered as one of the arts. Another source -- Irish Art Encyclopedia -- provides a definition for the singular term art which appears to include all of the arts. It states that in a broad sense, updated to the year 2009, "Art is created when an artist creates a beautiful object, or produces a stimulating experience that is considered by his audience to have artistic merit."[4] Earlier on the same page, we find the description that 'Art is a global activity which encompasses a host of disciplines, as evidenced by the range of words and phrases which have been invented to describe its various forms. Examples of such phraseology include "Fine Arts", "Liberal Arts", "Visual Arts", "Decorative Arts", "Applied Arts", "Design", "Crafts", "Performing Arts", and so on.'

Both art [sing.] and the arts [pl.] should theoretically include all art forms, but in common usage art refers to only one branch, the "Visual Arts", while the arts includes all the other forms, with an additional modifying adjective to describe the actual discipline, such as "Performing Arts", which could include music, ballet, opera, theater and contemporary dance. An interesting application of the word art as a modifying adjective in itself appears in the article for Art music. This term defines music created expressly as an artwork as opposed to popular or folk/traditional music.

Why the term art is commonly restricted to "Visual Arts" is unclear, although it could be conjectured that someone took the term "Fine art" and abbreviated it to "Art", for convenience, while other forms of art continued to require a modifying adjective for clarity. The term Fine art is now generally eschewed in favor of the more inclusive term, visual arts. This agrees very well with the definition for "History of art", which is "the history of the visual arts of painting, sculpture and architecture. It is the history of one of the fine arts, others of which are the performing arts and literature. It is also one of the humanities. The term sometimes encompasses theory of the visual arts, including aesthetics." It must be noted here that fine art as a singular term does not normally include the performing arts and literature, but as noted in the article for fine art, "Confusion often occurs when people mistakenly refer to the Fine Arts but mean the Performing Arts (Music, Dance, Drama, etc). However, there is some disagreement here, as, for example, at York University, Fine Arts is a faculty that includes the "traditional" fine arts, design, and the "Performing Arts". Furthermore, creative writing is frequently considered a fine art as well."
