Asperger syndrome is an autism spectrum disorder, and people with it therefore show significant difficulties in social interaction, along with restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior and interests. It differs from other autism spectrum disorders by its relative preservation of linguistic and cognitive development. Although not required for diagnosis, physical clumsiness and atypical use of language are frequently reported. [1][2]Asperger syndrome is also called Asperger's syndrome,[1] Asperger (or Asperger's) disorder,[3][4] or just Asperger's;[5] it is named after the Austrian pediatrician Hans Asperger who, in 1944, described children in his practice who lacked nonverbal communication skills, demonstrated limited empathy with their peers, and were physically clumsy.[6] Fifty years later, it was standardized as a diagnosis, but questions about many aspects remain.[7] For example, there is lingering doubt about whether it is distinct from high-functioning autism (HFA);[8] partly because of this, its prevalence is not firmly established. The exact cause is unknown, although research supports the likelihood of a genetic basis; brain imaging techniques have not identified a clear common pathology.[1] There is no single treatment, and the effectiveness of particular interventions is supported by only limited data.[1] Intervention is aimed at improving symptoms and function. The mainstay of management is behavioral therapy, focusing on specific deficits to address poor communication skills, obsessive or repetitive routines, and physical clumsiness.[9] Most individuals improve over time, but difficulties with communication, social adjustment and independent living continue into adulthood.[7] Some researchers and people with Asperger's have advocated a shift in attitudes toward the view that it is a difference, rather than a disability that must be treated or cured.[10] Asperger syndrome (AS) is one of the autism spectrum disorders (ASD) or pervasive developmental disorders (PDD), which are a spectrum of psychological conditions that are characterized by abnormalities of social interaction and communication that pervade the individual's functioning, and by restricted and repetitive interests and behavior. Like other psychological development disorders, ASD begins in infancy or childhood, has a steady course without remission or relapse, and has impairments that result from maturation-related changes in various systems of the brain.[11] ASD, in turn, is a subset of the broader autism phenotype (BAP), which describes individuals who may not have ASD but do have autistic-like traits, such as social deficits.[12] Of the other four ASD forms, autism is the most similar to AS in signs and likely causes but its diagnosis requires impaired communication and allows delay in cognitive development; Rett syndrome and childhood disintegrative disorder share several signs with autism but may have unrelated causes; and pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS) is diagnosed when the criteria for a more specific disorder are unmet.[13]

13. Asperger's Syndrome: Children with Asperger's Syndrome are Good Candidates for Hemispheric Integrat
January 29, 2009
Functional neurology deals with affecting neurologic pathways or areas of the brain that are under functioning (A functional disconnect syndrome with regard to an Asperger's child). This assumes that there are no structural problems in the anatomy and children with Asperger's Syndrome are just this type of situation. Their neurological workup that might have included an EEG or an MRI is usually normal. Thus we are dealing with a functional lesion and not a hard lesion such as a tumor or stroke. It is the practicing functional neurologist job to localize or find out where the problem is in the ... (read more)

19. Detecting Autistic Spectrum Disorders In An Early Stage Is Of Great Importance
September 03, 2008
It was not until the mid 20th century that the world became aware that autistic spectrum disorders existed. In 1943, Dr. Leo Kanner began to study a group that included 11 children and labeled the disorder that affected them as being what we know today as autism. At the same time, Dr. Hans Asperger, a German scientist, was describing a milder disorder within the same spectrum known as Asperger syndrome.
Today, we know it to be one of five developmental disorders that are often referred to as the autism spectrum disorders. Each illness in the autism spectrum will vary in degrees, with reg... (read more)

22. What Is The Asperger Syndrome?
August 18, 2008
Individuals who suffer from a disorder that causes impaired social behaviors, slow repetitive patterns and decreased motor abilities are normally diagnosed as having Asperger syndrome or AS. This disorder shares many of the same symptoms as high functioning autism and is in the autism spectrum of disorders, making it difficult to diagnose. While they are similar, they do have their differences and at times are treated differently. Also, those individuals with AS differ from autism patients in that there are normally no language skill delays.

23. The Difference Between Asperger's Syndrome and Autism
August 12, 2008
According to the DSM-IV classifications asperger's syndrome and autism are two separate disorders. There is debate however because aspergers and autism exhibit some of the same symptoms. The argument is that aspergers is a form an autism and should not be listed as a separate entity when diagnosing the disorder or when devising treatment. The argument relies on the idea that since there is no distinct criteria for either disorder and they are both persuasive developmental disorders they should be treated the same.
The argument about name is not just an argument on syntax, but an argument... (read more)

24. Dealing with Asperger Syndrome

Asperger Syndrome is a relatively mild form of autism that effects people in different ways than regular autism. Because it usually does not affect language, many people with Asperger Syndrome go undiagnosed. This is the one form of autism that is usually not caught at an early age and is instead a disorder that develops later in life. Asperger Syndrome, however, can be a very difficult condition to have, so as soon as you suspect yourself or your child of having communication and social behavior problems, see your family doctor.
