An autobiography (from the Greek, a?t??- autos self + ß???- bios life + ???fe??- graphein to write) is a book about the life of a person, written by that person. The word autobiography was first used by the poet Robert Southey in 1809 in the English periodical, the Quarterly Review, but the form goes back to antiquity. Biographers generally rely on a wide variety of documents and viewpoints; an autobiography however may be based entirely on the writer's memory. Closely associated with autobiography (and sometimes difficult to precisely distinguish from it) is the form of memoir. In antiquity such works were typically entitled apologia, implying as an example of much self-justification as self-documentation. John Henry Newman's autobiography (first published in 1864) is entitled Apologia Pro Vita Sua in reference to this tradition. The pagan rhetor Libanius (c. 314–394) framed his life memoir (Oration I begun in 374) as one of his orations, not of a public kind, but of a literary kind that could be read aloud in privacy.

January 11, 2010
One of the things that struck me on reading Andre Agassi's autobiography, "Open", was the obvious importance to him of his support team - both as a player and as an individual. Although it was Andre playing the matches and collecting the trophies, he freely acknowledges that he could not have done it without his brother and encourager Philly; his advisor and manager Perry Rogers; his coaches Nick Bollettieri, Brad Gilbert and Darren Cahill; his trainer, friend and sometimes-bodyguard, Gil Reyes; and even his father who pushed him to become the best tennis player in the world.

22. Anthony Trollope's Autobiography
September 16, 2009
This is wonderful book, to own, to treasure, to read and re-read for a lifetime!
Trollope's Autobiography is a perennial source of wisdom--besides being inspirational--to writers, but in particular to fiction writers. The book in general is an ABC of perfect, round sentences, and sentence variation, which of course makes for agile prose.
However, personally, I find three chapters that are unsurpassed in English letters: Chapter VII which contains his 'Scheme of Work;' Chapter X deals with language and the homage to Thackeray; and Chapter XII with Novels and the Art of Writing them.

25. Your Resume' Is Not Your Autobiography
August 03, 2009
The most common mistake made by people who attempt to put together their first resume is that they put in too much information. They want to describe everything that they have ever done from the moment of conception to the present. The resume ends up being too long, and nobody will read it.
The most important piece of information that you should retain is that your resume, no matter how well it is put together, will only get a 15 to 30 second review by the person who does the initial screening.
That person is normally someone in Human Resources whose job is to look at hundreds of ... (read more)
