A Baptist is a Christian who subscribes to a theology and may belong to a church that, among other things, is committed to believer's baptism (as opposed to infant baptism) and, with respect to church polity, favors the congregational model[1]. The term Baptist can also describe a local church, denomination, or other group of individuals made up of individual Baptists. Baptists are historically characterized by individual and local church autonomy and a disavowal of creeds leading to wide diversity in beliefs and practices among individuals and groups who would call themselves Baptist. While the term Baptist has its origins with the Anabaptists, and was sometimes viewed as pejorative, the denomination itself is historically linked to the English Dissenter, Separatist, or Nonconformism movements of the 16th century.[2] Most Baptist churches choose to associate with denominational groups that provide support without control. The largest Baptist association, apart from the Baptist World Alliance, is the Southern Baptist Convention (which left the World Alliance in 2004), but there are many other Baptist associations. There are also autonomous churches that remain independent of any denomination, organization, or association.

One of the best network marketers in the industry is none other than Paul Orberson. His story typifies the rags-to-riches journey that has surprised many network marketers. Orberson's story is classic American and captures the spirit of the dreams that many network marketers pursue today.

3. This Could Be Your Grandpa: Indirect Euthanasia Via Health Insurance?
October 31, 2009
A sad story in Miami, Florida regarding health insurance was recently brought to my attention. It highlights the flaws inherent in both public and private health insurance plans, and is an example of why healthcare reform is so important. A friend of mine has an ailing grandfather, named Benito Jimenez. Benito's daughter, Maria Conroy cares for him 24/7, and has taken charge of navigating the complexities of his insurance coverage. Her 85-year-old father has Medicare, but also has a Medicare Advantage administered by Humana. This would seem like an ideal compromise of the government and corp... (read more)

The Dangers of Discipleship A sermon on Mark 8:27-38
Then Jesus and his disciples set out for the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he was asking his disciples, "Who do people say I am?" They answered him, "Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, and still others one of the prophets." Then he began to ask them, "But who do you say I am?" Peter answered him, "You are the Christ!" Jesus sternly ordered them not to tell anyone about him.

6. Church insurance providers fear health-care reform
October 17, 2009
Like most health-care executives, O.S. Hawkins is keeping a close eye on Congress these days. And he's not sure he likes what he sees. Hawkins is president of GuideStone, the Southern Baptist health insurance and pension plan for ministers. He'd like to see health-care costs cut but fears reform might unintentionally put GuideStone and other denominational insurance plans out of business.
Hawkins was in Nashville last month for a meeting of Southern Baptist Convention leaders. He told them health-care reform is a major issue for the Church Benefits Association, made up of more than 30 d... (read more)

Employees and retirees of Memphis City Schools will likely be covered by Cigna and served by Methodist Healthcare next year in an insurance change the board of education is expected to approve next Monday.

Elijah Craig a Baptist minister in the late 18th century in Georgetown Kentucky unveiled to farmers and townsfolk alike the first Bourbon whiskey where the trend just took off. It is said that even the father of the great Abraham Lincoln got into the action.

16. Why now?
August 18, 2009
"Do you not say, ‘Four months more and then the harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest. Even now the reaper draws his wages, even now he harvests the crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together." Kim and I understood five years ago that God was calling us to Lebanon. As an act of obedience, we applied to the International Mission Board to be appointed as missionaries. For reasons that I will cover in another blog, that didn't work out. We took that as a sign that the time wasn't right yet, and settled back in... (read more)

17. Christ the Savior of the Body but Which One - the Matter of Timing?
August 10, 2009
In Eph. 5:23 we read where Paul says “Christ is the head of the church; and he is the savior of the body.” This passage is clear cut and easy to understand save for one thing – what body is it he is the savior of? Is it the Baptist church, the Lutheran, the Methodist, the Nazarene, or one of the hundreds of others that could be named? Many would say it is all of them taken collectively. It is a subject worthy of consideration, an important study, for if we do not get it right we will be found outside the body Jesus’ is saving at the last day.
It is important that we understand that wh... (read more)

18. Was Prophet Yahya Beheaded?
July 03, 2009
Was Prophet Yahya John the Baptist Beheaded?
by Agron Belica©2008
Prophet Yahya could not have been beheaded as has been stated by many Muslim and Christian scholars. In regards to Jesus in the Quran we read: “Peace on me the day I was born, the day that I die, and the day I will be raised up again.” The verse states that Jesus was given safety and security in these three situations. But what about Yahya ibn Zechariah? We find the same description for him as we find for Jesus, Peace on him the day he is born, the day he dies, and the day he is raised up again. ... (read more)

21. Repentance - How Can I Be Sure?
May 06, 2009
The words repent and repentance are Bible words, words hardly ever used outside of a religious context. In reading one’s New Testament, beginning with the gospel accounts, the first preaching that is recorded is that of John the Baptist preaching in the wilderness saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” (Matt. 3:2 NKJV) In Matt. 4:17 we see Jesus preaching the exact same message. The call to men from inspiration from the very beginning of the unfolding of the New Testament was a call to repentance. Jesus said it was a matter so important that it was repent or perish, an eit... (read more)

25. Fetus: I Hope He Changes His Mind
January 26, 2009
On the internet, that last bastion of free speech, a cartoon is going around of a frightened unborn child cocooned in a uterus. The caption says “I hope he changes his mind.” The “he” is an obvious inference to Barack Obama and his first act as president. Is it fair?
The question is rhetorical. Obviously liberally minded Americans think Obama’s policies are all just peachy keen and conservative Americans are trying to hold back the urge to regurgitate. Pragmatically speaking, if we could suspend the question of right and wrong, is the unborn child any safer? Liberal or conservative, there... (read more)
