In the wake of a terrorist bombing and a massive devaluation, the president of Belarus addressed his nation Thursday. Belarus’s President Alexander Lukashenko gave a three hour state of the nation speech Thursday. 2. EU Begins Radio Broadcasts into Belarus
February 27, 2006
The European Union has launched a new radio service into Belarus, where the opposition hopes to topple hardline President Alexander Lukashenko in an upcoming election.
The new service is staffed by Belarusian and Polish broadcasters. It beams news and music by shortwave from just across the Belarusian border in Vilnius, Lithuania.
The broadcasts include a daily hour-long series called "Window to Europe," and a series of election specials.

3. UN Official: Human Rights Violations in Belarus Getting Worse
January 12, 2006
The top United Nations human rights official for Belarus, Adrian Severin, says conditions there are getting worse.
Severin spoke in Brussels Wednesday.
He cited several examples - among them a new law making it a crime for Belarusians to criticize their government to international organizations, including the United Nations. He called the five year prison term for breaking this law "absurd."
The United States has called Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko Europe's last dictator because of his suppression of free speech and human rights.
