There’s no other way to put this, so at risk of another buzzword, how is it that sometimes some words and trends make it to the forefront of our consciousness. There’s the media hype of course, and when there are TV programs which make someone considerably well off by the concept of tidying up, it is no surprise that there are some things that register more than others. |
There is the hype of course. Would it be too much to suggest that giving mind space to whether or not a sweater gives you joy might suggest there’s not a lot of really important things going on in your day?
On the other hand, there are some buzzwords or media-hype which are rooted in something more definitive and something which is a real factor in today's world. One of those is resilience. We have always been resilient, some of us more than others. There are those who bounce back from adversity whereas others seem to drown under the pressure of it all.
In the past, it has been written off as a sort of personality trait, one of those things you either have or you don’t. In the same way, as some kids were popular at school and others were not, and it wasn’t until we developed some maturity that we worked out that the superficial was, well, exactly that - superficial.
It turns out though that resilience is a little different. You might have a natural propensity toward it, but if you don’t there are certain techniques and capabilities which you can learn in a resilience training program.
Why would you want to? When you think about workplace stress resilience it makes sense to have some tools at hand to deal with workplace stress. You see the thing is that work has changed. It used to be you could turn up on time, do a decent job and go home at the end of the day, pretty certain that when you went back tomorrow your job would be much the same. For better or worse, this is no longer the case.
You might be a great worker, you might do a brilliant job and be the best, most diligent employee but if you happen to work in a place where the company decides not to have a presence anymore for some reason, you are, as they say, SOL.
This is where a level of workplace stress resilience comes in really handy because it helps you come to terms with the realities of your own situation. Resilience then is the ability to deal with your reactions to the stuff that is thrown at you. The idea that even though you may be buffeted like flotsam or is it jetsam, you will make it through.
The other thing which a resilience training program might give you is a sense of perspective. The day you lose your job is usually unpleasant, a day full of anger and hurt and rejection. But, rest assured you can get through it, the world will still go on around you, and new opportunities will arise. The more cognisant you are of this, the more able you are to use it to your advantage.
