Exploring the Dragon Boat Festival [Source]The School’s Netwprk(SSAT) Confucius Institute[Time]2012-06-26 14:48:40 As the Dragon Boat (or Duanwu) Festival draws near, 25 Y7 students from Coundon Court School in Coventry have taken part in a special cultural workshop, led by local Chinese teacher Jodie Gardiner and Hanban teacher Liu Yang, to prepare for the festival. Coundon Court School is working with the SSAT Confucius Classroom at Finham Park School in Coventry. When it comes to Chinese festivals, students often know that zongzi are eaten at the Dragon Boat Festival and moon cake at Mid-Autumn Festival. However, experience and student feedback have shown that students’ understanding of the major Chinese festivals is often limited to knowing which foods are eaten! Because of this, it was decided that it was important to enable the students to examine the following questions: What is the origin of the Dragon Boat Festival? Why do we celebrate it? What are the traditions associated with the festival? Where do the traditions come from? Students were also encouraged to ask their own questions and find the answers. The first part of the workshop was an introduction to the festival. The teacher introduced the students to the story of Qu Yuan and the origins of the Dragon Boat Festival. Once the students understood the story and the traditions behind the festival, the celebrations meant more to them and they could appreciate the cultural significance of the festival. The second part of the project gave students the opportunity to make their own dragon boats. Teachers and students thought about the main features of the festival when devising a suitable activity and, after much discussion, it was decided that the students would create paper dragon boats. Every student worked hard to make their own beautiful dragon boat in the limited time available, with stunning results. The workshop gave the students the opportunity to uncover the meaning of the festival and take part in an activity which gave them a deeper understanding and appreciation of traditional Chinese culture.
