Calcium (pronounced /'kælsi?m/, KAL-see-?m) is the chemical element with the symbol Ca and atomic number 20. It has an atomic mass of 40.078 amu. Calcium is a soft gray alkaline earth metal, and is the fifth most abundant element by mass in the Earth's crust. Calcium is also the fifth most abundant dissolved ion in seawater by both molarity and mass, after sodium, chloride, magnesium, and sulfate. [1]Calcium is essential for living organisms, particularly in cell physiology, where movement of the calcium ion Ca2+ into and out of the cytoplasm functions as a signal for many cellular processes. As a major material used in mineralization of bones and shells, calcium is the most abundant metal by mass in many animals. Chemically calcium is reactive and soft for a metal (though harder than lead, it can be cut with a knife with difficulty). It is a silvery metallic element that must be extracted by electrolysis from a fused salt like calcium chloride.[2] Once produced, it rapidly forms a gray-white oxide and nitride coating when exposed to air. It is somewhat difficult to ignite, unlike magnesium, but when lit, the metal burns in air with a brilliant high-intensity red light. Calcium metal reacts with water, evolving hydrogen gas at a rate rapid enough to be noticeable, but not fast enough at room temperature to generate much heat. In powdered form, however, the reaction with water is extremely rapid, as the increased surface area of the powder accelerates the reaction with the water. Part of the slowness of the calcium-water reaction results from the metal being partly protected by insoluble white calcium hydroxide. In water solutions of acids where the salt is water soluble, calcium reacts vigorously. Calcium, with a specific mass of 1.55 g/cm3, is the lightest of the alkali earth metals; magnesium (1.74) and beryllium (1.84) are heavier although they are lighter in atomic mass. From strontium on, the alkali earth metals get heavier along with the atomic mass.

1. Feel the Bliss At Home Using Travertine Tiles
November 20, 2009
Travertine tiles are like the cousins of limestone tiles. They both are composite materials made from calcium carbonate. Another in their family is marble that has additional heat and pressure applied to it by the earth’s crust. But travertine is formed by minerals dissolved in ground water, which subsequently gets deposited on the earth’s surface by rivers, natural springs, or geysers.
You can find travertine tiles in a variety of colors like ivory, to beige, to reddish brown, and even gold. It actually depends on the iron content in the material. It also comes in different finishes such... (read more)

4. Kidney Cleanse
November 19, 2009
Kidney stones are accumulations of mineral salts that may lodge anywhere along the urinary tract. 80% of the time, they're calcium stones ( calcium oxalate ), a condition known as hypercalciuria. This is principally due to a diet consisting of too much animal protein. The consumption of animal protein is strongly associated with oxalate production. The body reacts by manufacturing too much acids to digest beef and other high-protein animal and fish foods. The surplus acids cause the pH balance of the blood to become too acidic. The body leeches calcium ( an alkaline mineral ) from the b... (read more)

9. Vitamin D - What You Need To Know.
November 16, 2009
Vitamin D plays a vital role in assisting the body to absorb calcium through the bowels (namely the small intestine). And without calcium, the body would struggle to develop and maintain healthy bones, muscles and teeth.
Our main source of vitamin D is actually produced by the body itself. When UV radiation in sunlight hits our skin, it reacts with a cholesterol-like substance, thus creating vitamin D. Anecdotally, very small amounts of the nutrient can be found in some food and drinks, but is rarely enough to provide the levels that the body needs. Many people get plenty of vitamin D... The skeletal bones make up more than 200 short, long, irregular, and flat structures. Inside the bones is calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and RBCs, or marrow, which produces and generate red blood cells. The bones work along side the muscles. The muscles and bones afford support, defense for the internal organs, and locomotion.
The skeletal muscles are our source of mobility, which supports the posture. The muscles work alongside the posture by shortens and tighten it. The bones attach to the muscles via tendons. The muscle then starts to contract with stimulus of muscle fibers via a mot... (read more)
