1. Pope Celebrates Mass in Birmingham England
September 19, 2010

Pope Benedict celebrated a beatification mass in Birmingham, England Sunday during which he moved a 19th century Anglican who converted to Catholicism, Cardinal John Henry Newman, one step closer to sainthood. The pope also recalled the Battle of Britain on the day chosen to commemorate its 70th anniversary. More than 50,000 people braved the cold and wet weather on Sunday to take part in Pope Benedict's final open-air mass in Cofton Park in Birmingham before he returns to Rome at the end of a 4-day visit to Britain. September 05, 2007

The late Pope John Paul II's private secretary - Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz - is urging fellow Roman Catholic church leaders to take immediate action against a popular priest accused of spreading anti-Semitism and nationalist politics by Catholic radio. April 07, 2005

When a Polish Cardinal was chosen to lead the Roman Catholic Church 26 years ago, he was a surprise selection, for 455 years the pontiff had been Italian.  Now, Catholic Cardinals are considering a successor, who could come from Africa, Asia or Latin America. There are 1.1 billion Roman Catholics worldwide.  Most of them live in the developing world. Catholicism is growing in Africa more than any other part of the world.  By church estimates, the number of Catholics in Africa has nearly doubled over the last twenty years, from 50 to 90 million.
