Cartography or mapmaking (in Greek chartis = map and graphein = write) is the study and practice of making representations of the Earth on a flat surface. Cartography combines science, aesthetics, and technical ability to create a balanced and readable representation that is capable of communicating information effectively and quickly. One problem in creating maps is the simple reality that the surface of the Earth, a curved surface in three-dimensional space, must be represented in two dimensions as a flat surface. This necessarily entails some degree of distortion, which can be dealt with by utilizing projections that minimize distortion in certain areas. Furthermore, the Earth is not a regular sphere, but its shape is instead known as a geoid, which is a highly irregular but exactly knowable and calculable shape. Maps of all scales have traditionally been drawn and made by hand, but the recent advent and spread of computers has revolutionized cartography. Most commercial-quality maps are now made with software that falls into one of three main types CAD, GIS, and specialized illustration software. Functioning as tools, maps communicate spatial information by making it visible. Spatial information is acquired from measurement of space and can be stored in a database, from which it can be extracted for a variety of purposes. Current trends in this field are moving away from analog methods of mapmaking and toward the creation of increasingly dynamic, interactive maps that can be manipulated digitally.

2. Tapestries: An Exploration of World Maps
November 03, 2008
People have always been curious about the world around them and the development of maps has echoed this historical fascination. Maps were once considered to be valuable objects and were treasured by their owners and regarded as works of art in their own right. These objects attracted the attention of artists as well as skilled draughtsmen and maps became quite ornate and decorative items, capturing the imagination of those who wondered what lay beyond the horizon.
Early maps tended to reflect what people knew or remembered and were largely topographical in nature. Often, these early piece... (read more)

3. Challenges That Face Aerial Photography Are Not Applicable In Classical Photography
December 17, 2007
Aerial photography is the art of taking photos of the ground while not standing on a ground structure with cameras mounted on aircrafts, balloons, helicopters, dirigibles or rockets. The first person who practiced aerial photography was Nadar, a French balloonist who made the first pictures over Paris in 1858 and thus remained in the history of photography. Aerial photography was used by the army for the first time in World War I, it is also applied in field studies like cartography, archeology, landing use plans, military or economical espionage, advertising and, last but not least in cinema... 4. Advantages of digital pipelines maps
June 07, 2007
Paper maps are no longer popular, or efficient considering the present necessities. That is the reason for which the latest technology in pipelines maps consists of digital cartography. This type of maps present several advantages, but they also serve to various purposes. A first aim of a pipeline map was to update already existing maps. This means that new standards have been created that respond better to needs of the companies. In this sense we cannot avoid saying that there are pipelines that have been taken out of usage but they still appear on old maps. This would not serve to companies ... (read more)

May 29, 2007
In the field of cartography, there are few jobs that are as uniquely suited to a graduate’s skills as the graduate surveyor. Surveyors are familiar figures in a variety of fields, mapping out residential and commercial lots for construction companies or determining the best land area for an urban planning firm. Graduate surveyors have a combination of skills that make their presence invaluable in the United Kingdom. Few people outside of cartography or engineering know how to make an accurate map, assess soil samples, or determine the structural issues of building on a certain type of land. Gr... (read more)

9. Google Earth - Zoom in!
December 17, 2005
Cartography, uptil some time ago, was the only way of mapping or charting the globe. Map-reading and map-making is a science, the subtleties of which might not be available to every lay person. However, commercial-use maps have been available for a long time now. They are especially useful for tourists and for drivers. The major drawback of paper 2-D maps was that they have always been location or area specific. While an atlas, in theory, is a collection of maps of the whole globe, minute details can never be divined from them.
Google Earth, the latest software application from the Inter... (read more)
