Central Europe is the region lying between the variously defined areas of Eastern and Western Europe. The term and widespread interest in the region itself came back into fashion [1] after the end of the Cold War, which, along with the Iron Curtain, had divided Europe politically into East and West, splitting Central Europe in half. The concept of Central Europe, and that of a common identity, is somewhat elusive.[2][3][4] However, scholars assert that a distinct "Central European culture, as controversial and debated the notion may be, exists."[5][6] It is based on "similarities emanating from historical, social and cultural characteristics",[5][7] and it is identified as having been "one of the world's richest sources of creative talent" between the 17th and 20th centuries.[8] A UN paper employs 8 factors "to define a cultural region called 'Central Europe'".[9] Cross Currents A Yearbook of Central European Culture characterized "Central Europe as an abandoned West or a place where East and West collide".[10] As of the 2000's, Central Europe is going through a phase of "strategic awakening",[11] and multiple Central European countries are routinely listed among the world's 30 most developed countries.[12][13] However, in Western popular culture, much of the region is still erroneously associated with Cold War era "backwardness".[8][14][15] The understanding of the concept of Central Europe is an ongoing source of controversy[16], though the Visegrád Group constituents are generally included as de facto C.E. countries.[1] The region is usually considered to include

The Obama administration just canceled plans for the placement of a missile defense system in Poland and the Czech Republic.
Why was this system canceled? It was canceled because the Russians didn't like it.
The system would have been useful in protecting the U.S. and our allies from the Iranians and the Russians. The Russians don?t feel that America deserves to be able to defend itself, and the Obama administration agrees.

Europe agreed to renew their pact to cap sales of gold for another five years causing gold prices to boost. This reaffirmed gold’s status as a key reserve asset. Also, the new Central Bank Gold Agreement reduced the maximum amount of gold that can be sold by the signatories. Under a new deal to replace the current five-year pact, the limit for sales has gone down to 2,000 tons from 2,500 tons.
