Childhood (being a child) is a broad term usually applied to the phase of development in humans between infancy and adulthood. In developmental psychology, childhood is divided up into the developmental stages of toddlerhood (learning to walk), early childhood (play age), middle childhood (school age), and adolescence (post-puberty). In many countries there is an age of majority when childhood ends and a person legally becomes an adult. The age can range anywhere from 13 to 21, with 18 being the most common. It has been argued that childhood is not a natural phenomenon but a creation of society. Philippe Ariès, an important French medievalist and historian, pointed this out in his book Centuries of Childhood. This theme was then taken up by Cunningham in his book the Invention of Childhood (2006) which looks at the historical aspects of childhood from the Middle Ages to what he refers to as the Post War Period of the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. Ariès published a study in 1961 of paintings, gravestones, furniture, and school records. He found that before the seventeenth century, children were represented as mini-adults. Since then historians have increasingly researched childhood in past times. Before Ariès, George Boas had published The Cult of Childhood.

A journey of many miles does begin with a single step. We can start instilling a saving habit in our children from the time when they can recognize money. Once it becomes a habit then they will never stop saving. At the age of 4, children can tell that money is used to purchase various things like clothes, ice-cream, entertainment and many other things that they see their parents buying. 9. Parent Approved Video Games
November 19, 2009
As the holidays approach, it is a good bet that teens are going to be looking at wholesale video games and asking for them as presents. Video games seem to trouble parents; there is an inherent distrust of the game world and a concern that the games will deprive the children of childhood fun and real world adventures. Some critics, however, say that carefully selected games, with oversight by adults, can bring real education into a kid's world and be a wonderful entertainment, so the parental concern may be ill-advised. The bottom line is that kids are likely to play wholesale video games, no... (read more)

13. Childhood memory of home roasted coffee beans
November 19, 2009
I remember vividly how my grandmother used to process our own coffee powder. The aroma is no match to any of the pre-processed and pre-packed coffee available on the market. We used to watch with interest (and often with a lot of questions!) as she finished one step after another.
There are coffee trees around my grandmother’s house. In fact, coffee trees are common sight throughout our village. These beans are oval-shaped and some are almost circular. They turned from green to red when they are ready to be picked. They are hand-picked and sun-dried. Whenever it rains, our grandm... (read more)

19. The Benefits of Online Life Coaching
November 19, 2009
Now more than ever people are looking for easy ways to manage the responsibilities of everyday life. When we were young, we marveled at the perceived grandiosity of adult responsibilities. We would play house, pretend to be firemen or police officers, and would yearn for the day when we were finally “grown ups.”
And now that we are older, we yearn for the listless afternoons and lazy days of childhood. Bills, child care, work, family – it seems the older we get the more there is to do and not enough time to do it.
And when you are looking for a listening ear and sound advice as to... (read more)

21. Making the Switch from Disposable to Washable Nappies
November 19, 2009
Washable nappies aren't what they used to be. Until a relatively short time ago, 'washable nappies' meant enormous terry squares which swamped the baby; it meant fiddling with giant safety pins, and boiling tin buckets of soiled nappies on the stove every day to get them clean. If that's your childhood recollection of Mum using washable nappies on your little brother or sister, and it's put you off the idea of using washables on your own baby, that's understandable. In today's fast-paced world we look for convenience in every aspect of our lives, and when it comes to nappies there's no exce... (read more)

November 19, 2009
Budget cuts mean the state will no longer cover the cost of some childhood vaccines for children with insurance.
Children who are uninsured, underinsured, eligible for Medicaid or Native American are still able to receive the immunizations for free. "During tough economic times, those that have resources, we're going to just ask them to perhaps contribute more than they have in the past, where those without resources we certainly want to protect," state health director Dr. Jeff Engel said.
That means private health insurance companies, like Blue Cross Blue Shield North Carolina... (read more)
