Search Results - Clouds

Type in a word or phrase to search, you can also type in Article ID's separated by commas:

A cloud is a visible mass of droplets or frozen crystals floating in the atmosphere above the surface of the Earth or another planetary body. A cloud is also a visible mass attracted by gravity (clouds can also occur as masses of material in interstellar space, where they are called interstellar clouds and nebulae.) The branch of meteorology in which clouds are studied is nephology or cloud physics.

On Earth the condensing substance is typically water vapor, which forms small droplets of ice crystals, typically 0.01&_160;mm in diameter. When surrounded by billions of other droplets or crystals they become visible as clouds. Dense deep clouds exhibit a high reflectance (70% to 95%) throughout the visible range of wavelengths they thus appear white, at least from the top. Cloud droplets tend to scatter light efficiently, so that the intensity of the solar radiation decreases with depth into the gases, hence the gray or even sometimes dark appearance of the clouds at their base. Thin clouds may appear to have acquired the color of their environment or background, and clouds illuminated by non-white light, such as during sunrise or sunset, may be colored accordingly. In the near-infrared range, clouds would appear darker because the water that constitutes the cloud droplets strongly absorbs solar radiation at those wavelengths.

Clouds are divided into two general categories layered and convective. These are named stratus clouds (or stratiform, the Latin stratus means "layer") and cumulus clouds (or cumuliform; cumulus means "piled up"), respectively. These two cloud types are divided into four more groups that distinguish the cloud's altitude. Clouds are classified by the cloud base height, not the cloud top. This system was proposed by Luke Howard in 1802 in a presentation to the Askesian Society.

These are found up to 2,000&_160;m (6,500&_160;feet) and include the stratus (dense and grey). When stratus clouds contact the ground, they are called fog.

5. Hooked on Height - Borneo Via Ferrata
November 03, 2008

Hooked on Height Via Ferrata, Mount Kinabalu, Borneo Sunrise. The drop is almost spectacular enough to make me drop my digital camera. Not that I look down at the black clouds amassing below me much as I dangle from Mount Kinabalu, aka the “Summit of Borneo”. Why? Well, for one thing, I have never been one for oohing and aahing. For another, yes, I’m scared. Not as scared as I was when rock-climbing on Thailand’s Koh Phi Phi, but enough to make my voice a bit shakey. I try to counter this effect by speaking gruffly until I realise that I sound as squeaky as a teenager on steroids... (read more)

7. The Clouds of Change
October 27, 2008

Spring break was a very mild weathered time, at least until I, my wife, and our children embarked on our journey to Flagstaff for a few nights. For days prior to departing, no more than an occasional sprinkle touched the ground. Forecast looked good, so by Sunday morning we were on our way We opted to go the Payson route to get there, as in our opinion, it is the much more beautiful one. On the way down the roadway made into a two lane highway in recent years, the sky became murky. The billowing clouds churned into dark harbingers of dreary precipitation. On and off it rained, but not... (read more)

8. The Weather in Lanzarote
October 27, 2008

The climate in Lanzarote is similar to the other six Canary Islands, with spring like weather all year round. The absence of any large central mountain means that the difference in temperature between the north and the south is minimal. In summer, the maximum temperature is around 25 degrees centigrade and in winter, the average is 17 degrees centigrade. Although winters are mild, the warm clouds sometimes collect on the mountains of the north of the island and fog can form over the Riscos de Famara. In recent years, the apparent change in pattern of world wide weather has brought a sl... (read more)

9. British Clouds Brighten Menorca
October 27, 2008

The world economy has conspired to make 2008 a poor one for the vacation island of Menorca, a favourite holidays destination for many European families. The top reason for a drop in visitors is currencies - Menorca like the rest of Spain is part of the Eurozone, while the UK where most of Menorca's visitors are based has maintained her own currency - sterling - and the Euro has gained strength in the last 12 months, making Menorca holidays some ten per cent more expensive this year than last. But some areas outside the Eurozone - notably Turkey - have gained popularity, with holiday ... (read more)

11. Ten Potential Opportunities in a Time of Crisis
October 24, 2008

There’s no doubt that these are trying times – and very few doubts that they will continue to be so for the foreseeable future as the real consequences of the biggest financial crisis since the Wall Street Crash play out across a wounded global economy. But at the same time in this case the hoary cliché about clouds and silver linings is true: the financial turmoil has thrown up opportunities for shared services organizations which, if seized, could greatly strengthen their value-propositions both during and after the recovery period. Not every SSO will be able to take advantage of all th... (read more)

13. Tornado Emergency Preparedness - You're Not in Kansas Anymore!
October 22, 2008

Those of you who are old enough to remember the classic movie The Wizard of Oz, will remember the feeling of terror Dorothy felt after discovering the ‘twister” had taken her far from her home in Kansas. Although the Land of Oz and Dorothy’s experiences there were pure imagination, the effects of a tornado can be devastatingly real. Tornadoes, violent windstorms generally characterized by funnel-shaped clouds, usually come in thunderstorms from cumulonimbus clouds. The narrow end of the tornado touches the earth and is often encircled by a cloud of debris that it picks up as it mov... (read more)

October 18, 2008

I seem to lost count on how many times I've read and heard of celebrity marriages failing almost left and right. Not that I care (and personally I don't), it seems strange that we often see movie and TV stars as flawless people, living the fairytale life of riches and glamour. I suppose we all have to stop sticking our heads in the clouds and face reality. There are many ways to lose your sense of self-esteem despite of how trivial it could get. But whatever happens, we should all try not to lose our own sense of self. So what does it take to be a cut above the rest? Here are some of... (read more)

15. GET PAMPERED WITH YOUR DREAMS IN REALITY
October 20, 2008

I was playing amidst the miracle of Heaven in the Earth where I was in the confluence of azure sky, the azure sea and the romantic white clouds in their flamboyance. As I reached out for the long distant astonishers, I got mesmerized with the incredible geometric-perfection of the hilarious hills in sight. In co-ordination with the scenic excellence, the wondrous wind rocked with an emollient touch of ecstasy. Later I discovered the sunny luminescence spreading across the horizon with its inexpressible touch of joy. The tall greeneries took our nature’s vanity in an ulterior altitude. You need... Picture this: you’re the sexiest gal on the dance floor, bumping and grinding in that slinky dress. An equally sexy guy comes up to you and you’re on cloud nine. He’s looking at your chest. You are offended. You look as your test as well. A thought comes to mind. You fall from the clouds and land flat on your butt. Yes, your nipples are showing. And the world can see. 18. Cape Town accommodation is best in Riebeek West
October 03, 2008

Spring is officially here. Enough with rain clouds dampening our spirit! Cape Town is not a city that looks best when drenched in rainfall. That moniker falls to New York or London. When I picture Cape Town, I see a bright sun heating us as we walk to work and a fresh breeze cooling the sweat on our backs. Cape Town is about fun, exploration and lazy days spent on the beach. We know this, the world knows this but the seasons are not aware of this important fact yet. As I write these words, the wind is chilly and the sun hides behind gray clouds of rain. Many drivers do not take out sufficient cover to protect themselves against damage caused by floods. According to recent statistics, 1 in 4 people who live in flood risk areas do not have sufficient cover which means they could end up having to pay a considerable amount of money in repairs. My Aunt Wendy was one of the greatest cooks I've ever known. Any time we went to her house, even just for a quick visit, there was something great to eat happening in the kitchen. She made cakes, pies and cookies that were the winners of blue ribbons at every contest in town. And her holiday dinners were the most sought-after invite in the entire family. Things that go bump in the night Dark clouds gathered over the town on that particular evening.
