Sri Lankan Minister, 10 Others Killed in Bomb Attack April 06, 2008 Sri Lankan police say a bomb attack just outside the capital, Colombo, has killed the Minister of Highways, Jeyaraj Fernandopulle, and at least 10 other people. The attack took place Sunday at the start of a marathon in Sri Lanka's western district of Gampaha. The minister was opening the event in the town of Weliveriya when the explosion occurred. At least 25 people were wounded in the blast. The government blames Tamil Tiger rebels for the attack, but there was no immediate claim of responsibility. Eastern Sri Lanka District Holds First Municipal Elections Over a Decade March 10, 2008 Sri Lankans in the volatile eastern district of Batticaloa are at the polls Monday to cast ballots in the first municipal elections in more than a decade. Thousands of police are on patrol to prevent any violence. The elections are seen as a step towards democracy after the Sri Lankan government seized control of the region from ethnic Tamil Tiger rebels last year.
