A composer (Latin com+ ponere, literally "one who puts together") is a person who creates music, usually by musical notation, for interpretation and performance. The level of distinction between composers and other musicians varies, which affects issues such as copyright and the deference given to individual interpretations of a particular piece of music. In the development of European music, the function of composing music initially did not have much greater importance than that of performing it. The preservation of individual compositions did not receive enormous attention and musicians generally had no qualms about modifying compositions for performance. Over time, however, the written notation of the composer came to be treated as strict instructions from which performers should not deviate without good practical or artistic reason. Performers do, however, play the music and interpret it in a way that is all their own. In fact, in the concerto form, the soloist would often compose and perform a cadenza as a way to express their individual interpretation of the piece. The term "composer" is often used to refer to composers of instrumental music, such as those found in classical, jazz or other forms of art and traditional music. In popular and folk music, the composer is usually called a songwriter, since the music generally takes the form of a song.

10. A Big Mistake Made by My Girl Friend
October 01, 2009
My girl friend, Christine, who has participated in the audition of American Idol, in fact is a shy and cute girl. On the show, she sang a lyric song. Though some audiences there criticized her for not singing well enough to advance the next round, I personally think her talent of being a professional composer can make up for the singing part. She was very brave to stand on that stage, being and showing herself to so many people, who made me admire her more. However, when she sat on a chair and sang the songs composed by herself with a whole new dressing style in the second round, I was very di... (read more)

August 20, 2009
Exactly how many piano concertos did W.A. Mozart write? Well, that’s a tougher question than you might think.
The answer depends on whether you count some of his earliest attempts at this musical genre, which were actually arrangements of compositions by others. Until a few decades ago, the first four piano concertos of Mozart were not included in the catalogue for this reason (K.37, 39, 40, and 41). However, more recently, musicologists have included them, and renumbered the catalogue, so that the Mozart piano concerto that used to be known as Number 1 is now referred to as Number 5. ...
