Politics and government of
the United States

The United States Congress is the bicameral legislature of the federal government of the United States of America, consisting of two houses, the Senate and the House of Representatives. Both senators and representatives are chosen through direct election.

As provided by the United States Constitution, each of the 435 members of the House of Representatives represents a district and serves a two-year term. House seats are apportioned among the states by population. The 100 Senators serve staggered six-year terms. Each state has two senators, regardless of population. Every two years, approximately one-third of the Senate is elected.

The Congress meets in the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C.

1. A Brief History of United States Presidents
November 17, 2008

There have been many Presidents of the United States since the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776, but few people realize that the Presidential history also includes a series of Presidents who lead the Colonies long before the United States was founded as a free nation. Even though the colonies were controlled by King George III, the Congress which governed the colonies under the King was lead by a President. By the time July 2, 1776 rolled around and the Declaration of Independence was signed, the colonies had already had two Presidents, Peyton Randolph and Henry Middleton. Joh... (read more)

2. Why end the Federal Reserve
November 17, 2008

Most people today do not understand where inflation comes from, how our money is printed, and who is in charge of printing our money. To make it worse the average American does not even know what the Constitution says about our government and money. To keep it simple, the United States Constitution says in article 1, section 8. "[Congress shall have the power..]To coin Money, regulate the Value thereof, and of foreign coin, and fix the Standard of Weights and Measures". The Constitution does not give Congress the authority to print paper money themselves, let alone delegate control over mone... (read more)

3. The Future of the Labor Movement
November 07, 2008

As election day draws near, it appears extremely likely that Barack Obama will be elected the next President of the United States. In addition, there is a general consensus, even among Republicans, that the Democrats will pickup seats in congress and may even obtain a “filibuster proof” majority in the Senate. Currently, the Democrats have 49 seats in the Senate. In addition to those 49 seats, there are 2 independents, Joe Lieberman and Bernard Sanders, who caucus with the Democrats, effectively giving them a 51 seat majority. However, in order to get anything done in the Senate, 60 votes... (read more)

4. Do I Need To Buy A New TV Before The Digital Switch On February 17, 2009?
November 06, 2008

On February 17, 2009 all full-power broadcast television stations in the United States will stop broadcasting on analog airwaves and begin broadcasting only on digital. Since the 1990’s, Congress determined that broadcast stations must transition from analog television broadcasting to digital television broadcasting. Converting to DTV will free up broadcasting bands that will be used for public safety and emergency services. New wireless services, such as broadband will also be able to utilize these freed up airwaves. Consumers will also benefit from this transition, because digital broad... (read more)

6. International Views on Biofuels
September 29, 2008

I am just back from spending a week with 250 agricultural journalists from all over the world. The International Federation of Agricultural Journalists congress is an annual event that meets each year in a different country. This year we visited Austria and Slovenia - next year the congress will come to the United States and we will entertain the group in Fort Worth, Texas. It is always interesting to get perspectives on agriculture from other countries. Biofuels production was a big topic of discussion and many people that I talked to were very interested in the progress being made in th... (read more)

7. The Career in Politics
September 23, 2008

Why do candidates for Congress spend millions of dollars for an office that pays $169,200.00? Between 2004 and 2006, members of Congress' net worth increased an average of 84% - book advances, speaking engagements, stock and land deals, privileged mortgages, etc. The United States is no longer the representative democracy and politics our founders conceived because of a glaring flaw in our Constitution: it allows individuals to make a career of public office. This creates a critical conflict of interest for politicians between their own ambitions and their responsibility as representative... (read more)

8. Chinese trading shanghai business and china business forum
September 11, 2008

China has become the United States’ third-largest trading partner and the sixth-largest market for US exports. A rising US trade deficit with China has generated much heat but little light about unfair Chinese trade practices. As china continues its rise as a great power, The United States Congress and the administration wrestle with one another over the proper tactics and strategies to shape US-China economic relations. The US trade deficit with China will greatly reduce if the US lifts high-tech-export restrictions to China. A general relaxation of capital and foreign-exchange cont... (read more)

10. Voting for President is a Serious Issue
September 02, 2008

The people of our country truly worry me. Voting for the President of the United States is a serious issue and not an entertainment piece. For beginners, I am tired of hearing irrational and apparent uneducated persons' accusing George Bush of everything. The number #1 primary duty of our president is to protect the people. "Commander in Chief" Congress is the blame for most issues and believe it or not, a lot of it begins in your particular state and cities. So please vote, however, before venturing out, place some effort in deciding who to vote for. Don’t vote because you want to see h... (read more)

11. Obama and the Democrats Push to Influence Our Children
September 02, 2008

Let's face it, we as parents always put our children's needs first. Doesn't it go to say by electing The President of the United States, we need to think more about our children's future than ourselves? After all we are all promised big changes by democrats that never occur. Pelosi and the democrats have controlled congress for almost 2 years and although they made many promises for change, nothing has occurred. We are all well aware of the importance our teachers bring who teach and program our children. Parents and teachers have a profound effect on how are children will think and be... (read more)
