Conquistador (
Spanish [
kon.kis.t?a'ð?o?]) (
English Conqueror) is a Spanish
loanword meaning a Spanish soldier,
explorer, and
adventurer who took part in the gradual
invasion and conquest of much of the
Americas and
Asia Pacific, bringing them under
Spanish colonial rule between the 15th and 19th centuries.
The term used for the Portuguese explorers and conquerors of Brazil is the Bandeirantes.
The conquistadors were generally younger, while the warlords were mostly middle aged.
