Costa Rica, officially the Republic of Costa Rica ( Spanish Costa Rica or República de Costa Rica, pronounced&_160;[re?'puß?lika ð?e? 'ko?sta 'rika]) is a country in Central America, bordered by Nicaragua to the north, Panama to the east and south, the Pacific Ocean to the west and south and the Caribbean Sea to the east. Costa Rica, which translates literally as "Rich Coast", constitutionally abolished its army permanently in 1949.[2][3][4] Costa Rica has consistently been among the top Latin American countries in terms of the Human Development Index, and ranked 54th in the world in 2007.[5] The country is ranked 5th in the world, and 1st among the Americas, in terms of the 2008 Environmental Performance Index.[6][7] In 2007 the Costa Rican government announced plans for Costa Rica to become the first carbon neutral country by 2021.[8][9][10] According to the New Economics Foundation, Costa Rica ranks first in the Happy Planet Index and is the greenest country in the world.[11] In pre-Columbian times the indigenous people were part of the international Intermediate Area located between the Mesoamerican and Andean cultural regions. This has recently been updated to include the influence of the Isthmo-Colombian area. It was the point where the Mesoamerican and South American native cultures met. The northwest of the country, the Nicoya Peninsula, was the southernmost point of Nahuatl cultural influence when the Spanish conquerors (conquistadores) came in the sixteenth century. The central and southern portions of the country had Chibcha influences. However, the indigenous people have influenced modern Costa Rican culture to a relatively small degree, as most of these died from diseases such as smallpox[12] and mistreatment by the Spaniards.

Getting around Costa Rica these days is pretty simple. Although rains can wash out roads, most are in great shape which makes getting around the country fairly easily. 15 years or so ago, getting to even major towns like Tamarindo could be a challenge. Going with anything less than a four wheel drive was just nuts.

3. Ecotourism In Costa Rica, Lessons The World Could Learn From
November 02, 2009
Costa Rica is sometimes called "The Switzerland of Central America," certainly because of the magnificent mountains and scenery each possesses. Undoubtedly, the comparison is meant to be flattering to the little Central America country but Switzerland and all of Mother Earth would be better off if it were called "The Costa Rica of Europe," at least in terms of ecology and emphasis on preserving animal life.
There was a time, long, long ago, when both nations had abundant wildlife. Switzerland had bears, wolves, lynx, chamois, and deer but the predators were killed off hundreds of years... (read more)

13. The Best Coffee from Costa Rica

How would you know that your cup of coffee is perfect? Is there such a thing as perfect coffee? That is the critique labeled on Costa Rican coffees. They categorized their type of coffee as the classic cup, the traditional balanced coffee that has no defects or flaws. But there's more to a Costa Rican coffee, for they are prized for their exceptionality- bright citrus or berry-like flavors in the acidity and in the best cups they fade into chocolate or spice flavors in the aftertaste.

25. Breyer Horses Are the Most Realistic Toy Horse Gifts
October 09, 2009
I visited Costa Rica and did a lot of horseback riding there. Costa Rica has the boniest, most pathetic looking horses I have ever seen. I actually felt sorry for them trying to carry me and my family. Glue factories come to my mind when I look at them. In fact, my horse actually passed out while I was riding it. He had just carried me up a big hill. After he got us to the top, he walked over to the ledge of a 60 foot cliff and fainted. He fell right off the cliff with me on him. My family watched in amazement as me and my horse disappeared over the edge. Fortunately for me, I landed about 20 ... (read more)
