A court is a governmental institution with the authority to adjudicate legal disputes and dispense civil, criminal, or administrative justice in accordance with rules of law. [1] In common law and civil law states, courts are the central means for dispute resolution, and it is generally understood that all persons have an ability to bring their claims before a court. Similarly, those accused of a crime have the right to present their defense before a court. Court facilities range from a simple farmhouse for a village court in a rural community to huge buildings housing dozens of courtrooms in large cities. A court is a kind of deliberative assembly with special powers, called its jurisdiction, to decide certain kinds of judicial questions or petitions put to it. It will typically consist of one or more presiding officers, parties and their attorneys, bailiffs, reporters, and perhaps a jury. The term "court" is often used to refer to the president of the court, also known as the "judge" or the "bench", or the panel of such officials. For example, in the United States, and other common law jurisdictions, the term "court" (in the case of U.S. federal courts) by law is used to describe the judge himself or herself.[2]

November 14, 2008
The economy has prompted many to seek a bankruptcy attorney to help with their personal financial crisis. It actually creates more problems for the courts and for you, so seeking the advice of a qualified bankruptcy attorney is crucial if you are planning on filing for bankruptcy.
Before the laws changed, filing a bankruptcy was very common, but not many ... (read more)

13. What is Denouncement?
October 20, 2008
Libel and slander are the two categories of defamation in the United States. In many states, courts have begun treating them the same as the only difference between the two is that libel is a false written statement about a person, place or thing that harms his/her/its reputation while slander is the verbal act of the same offense. Whether blogged on the internet or whispered offline to your mother, the common denominator is that what is said is false.
Now the internet contributes some interesting layers of complication to the whole blogging shebang. Instead of being enclosed in a localiz... (read more)

16. "Is Civil Litigation Worth It?"
October 13, 2008
It's not always worth it to pursue civil litigation. Oftentimes small claims courts don't offer enough compensation to pay for the actual damages necessary. This means you either get left hanging or take your case to the next level in the process of civil litigation.
Both of these situations require you to pay higher costs, and you're going to take more risk (after all the time, hard work and expense there's a chance the judge won't award you anything).
First, take a good hard look at how much money you can realistically win if you go to court. If your case is best heard in small cla... (read more)

Criminal records that include the names and statements of the witnesses and victims contain a lot of sensitive information about them and once these records become part of the public records, this information is available for all to see. This could prove to be a security risk to the parties concerned. Not only that, if there is something inaccurate in the records, then it could also ruin the reputation of the individual. This is precisely the reason why government agencies and courts do not provide complete access to the information that is available online or even in their offices.

There are many websites that offer criminal record access for free. Keeping the public interest in mind, some of the courts too waived the fee they used to charge for these records. There are two types of criminal records, the public records and the non-public ones. These days, records are maintained online by the states, counties as well as the federal courts. This is an easier way of gaining access to public criminal records instead of going to the courts in search of them. Companies and citizens are given free access to these records by some websites.
