Capital punishment debate
Religion and capital punishment
Wrongful executionThis form of execution was widely practiced in Ancient Rome and in neighbouring Mediterranean cultures; similar methods were invented in the Persian Empire.[1] Crucifixion was used by the Romans until AD 337,[2] after Christianity had been legalized in the Roman Empire in 313 and had become the religion favoured by the Emperor Constantine I, but before it became the official state religion. However, crucifixion has been used in various places in modern times. A crucifix, an image of Christ crucified on a cross, is for most Christians the main symbol of their religion, but some Protestant Christians prefer to use a cross without the figure (the "corpus" - Latin for "body") of Christ.

1. 5 Chocolate holidays
June 14, 2008
Easter: Easter heralds the arrival of the Easter bunny and his delicious bounty of chocolate eggs. Religiously, Easter is celebrated to commemorate the resurrection of Christ on the third day after his crucifixion. The eggs are considered symbolic to the resurrection, where parallels are drawn with the baby chick hatching out of its shell. The egg shell represents the grave he was buried in, and the chick, the form of Christ.
While traditionally hard-boiled chicken eggs were painted and gifted to each other, chocolate has replaced this part of the holiday, and now chocolate eggs are give... (read more)

2. Time Capsule - A Fictional Journey
March 31, 2008
The day of discovery has arrived. Does any one have a crow bar? Though a little dusty, the first item appears to be from the Early Renaissance period. How can the author tell at first glance? A large volume of art produced during this period was religious. Our first specimen appears to a depiction of "The Crucifixion". A tempera medium on wood, the artist, Konrad von Soest (Web Gallery of Art, n.d.) was an active artisan from about 1394 to 1422. According to records, this work of art was created in either 1404 or 1414. Why are religious art forms so dominant in this period? The early rena... (read more)

3. Whatever Became of Jesus?
March 07, 2008
Most Westerners are familiar with the story of Jesus Christ—perhaps the greatest moral teacher of all time. While the gospels devote many pages to his life, ministry, crucifixion and resurrection, the accounts of what happened to him after that are minimal. One would think, once Jesus was physically back walking on the earth after his resurrection, that the story of what became of the rest of his life would receive substantial coverage in the New Testament. But it is barely mentioned at all. Maybe there are reasons for this. The Gospel of Matthew devotes 156 verses to the story of Je... (read more)

4. Mel Gibson's Movie "Apocalypto" - Ugly as Sin
December 31, 2007
Mel Gibson is a crazy man. That’s what I love about him. He’s consumed by a vision of either God or religion or a mixture of both.
First Gibson shocked audiences with the gruesome reality of Christ's crucifixion in The Passion of Christ. Now, in Apocalypto, Gibson illustrates the ugliness of sin.
Mel Gibson utilizes his access to mainstream culture to challenge mainstream thinking. Where public schools teach about evil europeans invading the innocent, peace-loving Native Americans, Gibson portrays the Catholic explorers as the protectors of the innocent. The point is that neither sid... (read more)

5. The Essence of Scriptures
October 04, 2007
If the person agrees that Christians believe in the Bible, and people understand the miracles because of the Bible, then all Christians must trust in miracles. Hume does not agree with the statements that Christianity and other beliefs can not exist without the magnificence of miracles. Hume assures that miracles make us believe in the scriptures. The majority may say that there were not any scriptures from the starts of Christianity. There was some kind of works that were done for future generations. After those works the texts were written, which had to be published. Only very rich ... (read more)

8. Selected Artwork by Hermann Nitsch
July 28, 2007
Hermann Nitsch was celebrated and reviled in equal measure as he took the semblance of a pagan ceremony and incorporated robed processions, symbolic crucifixion, drunken excess, nudity, animal sacrifice, the drinking of blood, and the ritualistic incorporation of viscera and entrails. Even today, his audiences aren't mere visitors, but active participants in his artistic liturgies.
Hermann Nitsch's work draws parallels between religion and the ritualistic spiritualism of creativity. Heavily entrenched in ancient philosophy and a dissident, questioning Christian theology, he actively seeks... (read more)

9. The Narrow Gate (Choosing the Right Way of Life)
May 28, 2006
For thousands of years of our world’s tradition, majority always rules. The common people decide and the few are left behind. From the crucifixion of Christ in the cross to the election of most of today’s world’s leaders in their presidency, it’s always the majority of votes that becomes the cause. The good choice is the choice of the common people. But can we indeed rely on the choice of the common people? Well, to answer that question, I have enumerated some facts that describe the common people. Fact 1: Lying is common to people.
Fact 2: Majority of the people crave for mo... (read more)

11. Daily Surrender Psalms 119:158
May 17, 2006
May 17, 2006
Psalms 119:158 I beheld the transgressors, and was grieved; because they kept not thy word.
I recently heard this song about a carpenter who finally decides to retire. As he hangs up his hammer he says, “I don’t want to drive another nail”. Later, on Easter morning his wife brings him to a service where the preacher talks about the nails in Jesus hands. The old carpenter got convicted of his sins against Jesus and said, “I don’t want to drive another nail”!
Our spiritual sickness of indifference and confusion laid the healing stripes (Is 53: 5) on Jesus’ body. O... (read more)

13. An Introduction To Palm Trees
March 01, 2006
A palm tree symbolizes life and its continuance, as well as joy and happiness. Dante mentions that Christians travelling to the Holy Land were known as "palmeros." palm trees have been a part of myths as well as religion. The palm tree in the primal garden, the Garden of Eden, was known to be the tree of Life. Palm trees were also where the Goddess Astarte or Tamar resided. A festival known as "palm Sunday" is celebrated by Christians to commemorate the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem just a few days before his crucifixion. People welcomed Jesus by waving palm fronds and carpeting his path with... (read more)
