Culture (from the Latin cultura stemming from colere, meaning "to cultivate") [1] is a term that has different meanings. For example, in 1952, Alfred Kroeber and Clyde Kluckhohn compiled a list of 164 definitions of "culture" in Culture A Critical Review of Concepts and Definitions. [2] However, the word "culture" is most commonly used in three basic senses When the concept first emerged in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Europe, it connoted a process of cultivation or improvement, as in agriculture or horticulture. In the nineteenth century, it came to refer first to the betterment or refinement of the individual, especially through education, and then to the fulfillment of national aspirations or ideals. In the mid-nineteenth century, some scientists used the term "culture" to refer to a universal human capacity. In the twentieth century, "culture" emerged as a concept central to anthropology, encompassing all human phenomena that are not purely results of human genetics. Specifically, the term "culture" in American anthropology had two meanings (1) the evolved human capacity to classify and represent experiences with symbols, and to act imaginatively and creatively; and (2) the distinct ways that people living in different parts of the world classified and represented their experiences, and acted creatively. Following World War II, the term became important, albeit with different meanings, in other disciplines such as sociology, cultural studies, organizational psychology and management studies. In the nineteenth century, humanists such as English poet and essayist Matthew Arnold (1822-1888) used the word "culture" to refer to an ideal of individual human refinement, of "the best that has been thought and said in the world."[3] This concept of culture is comparable to the German concept of bildung "...culture being a pursuit of our total perfection by means of getting to know, on all the matters which most concern us, the best which has been thought and said in the world."[3]

4. Holding to Faith by Rodney Howard Browne
November 06, 2009
Moses took a forty-story fall. As we pick up the biblical account, he is a heavy-hearted, bruised-and-battered soul who has come to a sudden stop at the bottom. In a matter of mere days, he has stepped off the head of the pyramid as Pharaoh-designate and down to a bedraggled, broke fugitive on the backside of Zipville. Living as we do in a product-oriented culture, we like to package our faith too. We like to sell a slick, shrink-wrapped version of deliverance that includes wealth and peace, everlasting happiness here and now, and heaven by and by. While there's tiny wrong with teaching p... 7. Divorce Tactics: How Do You Survive A Divorce
November 06, 2009
Our modern culture reminds us to use calm voices, speak clDivorce Tactics Our modern culture reminds us to use calm voices, speak clearly, and limit revealing our emotions. In some circumstances, this approach results in a sneaky undercurrent of categorizing a person who reacts loudly and with intense emotion to a situation as a hysteric, as a lunatic, or as an unstable individual. This new cultural approach was even evident in our last Presidential election when Hillary Clinton was described as “shrill,” or when footage of her becoming upset in a situation was aired for American...
