Big Government vs Small Government: Does it Matter?

There is little doubt that the direction this country is headed is one of socialism. Democrats are not the democrats of John F. Kennedy’s day. Nor are they the party of the working man or the poor. They are the party of government control. Having said that, the Republicans used to be the party of small government, but President George W. Bush doubled the amount of government under his leadership. They used to also be known as the party of the wealthy and received most of their money from the big business. Now HIllary Clinton and President Obama receive more money from big banks and Wall Street than the Republicans do. So what is going on?

Neither party is for the people. Both are fighting for power. You might say they are both fighting to control the government. Maybe they are both socialists and want big government. I heard someone say the difference between the republicans and the democrats is that it will take the republicans just a little longer to become socialists. Most of our politicians seemed to have shifted left. The more progressive ones have shifted into socialism or big government control and the republicans have shifted left into the progressive mode, but not small government.

In all fairness though there are some on both sides of the aisle who seemed to have held onto the traditional American values, unfortunately, it is not the majority. The republicans brand democrats as liberals or socialists wanted big government while the left brands the right as extremists, bigots and racists who want small government where big corporation control and the poor and working man are forgotten. It seems to me we are arguing over the wrong thing. I believe we could have big government or small government, it would not matter much, if we had leaders who put the people and the country before their re-election and their donors. In other words, the problem is not the philosophy, it is greed and selfishness. Because there is so much corruption and “big money” control in our government, it seems like socialism would be a better option. For those who are against socialism, we should not be surprised people are moving in that direction. That is what happens when a few people start to get too much power. Now many of the citizens of this country think the government is the only source strong enough to reign in the “big money” influence.

That is probably true, except the government is corrupt now and they have melded together with big business into one big mess. Not for them, just for us. They know what they are doing and are fine with how things are. It is the poor and middle class that are being destroyed. There is one power greater than money though. It is the voice and vote of the people. That does require the citizens to take some interest in what is going on though instead of being swayed by the “forked tongues” of our political leaders and candidates.

The only difference I see in the two philosophies (big government vs small government), at least from the way they are manifesting themselves, is the capitalists progress to where corporations have all the money and control and socialists make it so the extreme wealthy elite and government have all the control. What is really the difference in the end? The poor and middle class lose either way.

We need to get over the “big government” vs “small government” argument and clean out our house so we can see clearly to have any government that is effective and transparent. The only way this can happen is if our politicians are afraid of not getting re-elected and our businesses are afraid no one is going to buy their products. We have to pull together as people. If we do, we can triumph. If we continue to fight and blame, we will fail and there are a lot of people in this world hoping for that.
