Dark Age or Dark Ages is a term in European historiography referring to the Early Middle Ages. The concept of a Dark Age was created by the Italian scholar Petrarch (Francesco Petrarca) in the 1330s and was originally intended as a sweeping criticism of the character of Late Latin literature.[1] Later historians expanded the term to refer to the transitional period between Classical Roman Antiquity and the High Middle Ages, including not only the lack of Latin literature, but also a lack of contemporary written history, general demographic decline, limited building activity and material cultural achievements in general. Popular culture has further expanded on the term as a vehicle to depict the Middle Ages as a time of backwardness, extending its pejorative use and expanding its scope.[2]

The rise of archaeology and other specialties in the 20th century has shed much light on the period and offered a more nuanced understanding of its positive developments.[2] Other terms of periodization have come to the fore Late Antiquity, the Early Middle Ages, and the Great Migrations, depending on which aspects of culture are being emphasized.

When modern scholarly study of the Middle Ages arose in the 19th century, the term "Dark Ages" was at first kept, with all its critical overtones. On the rare occasions when the term "Dark Ages" is used by historians today, it is intended to be neutral, namely, to express the idea that the events of the period often seem "dark" to us only because of the paucity of artistic and cultural output,[3] including historical records, when compared with later times.[4]

It is generally accepted that the concept was created by Petrarch in the 1330s. Writing of those who had come before him, he said, "Amidst the errors there shone forth men of genius, no less keen were their eyes, although they were surrounded by darkness and dense gloom."[1] Christian writers had traditional metaphors of "light versus darkness" to describe "good versus evil". Petrarch was the first to co-opt the metaphor and give it secular meaning by reversing its application. Classical Antiquity, so long considered the "dark" age for its lack of Christianity, was now seen by Petrarch as the age of "light" because of its cultural achievements, while Petrarch's time, lacking such cultural achievements, was seen as the age of darkness.

2. Try Forefoot Running, It Might Just Reduce Your Injuries
November 03, 2008

I feel as if I have just emerged from the dark ages. After many years of being told that I run incorrectly, I found that there is nothing wrong with running on the balls of your feet. In fact, most of the top runners are forefoot strikers. Not that I fall in the “top runner” category. After running for about 15 years and suffering from virtually every injury ever recorded for the leg from the knee downwards, I stopped running seriously for about 10 years except for the occasional jog. The beginning of this year I decided that it is time to seriously start running again. I reckoned that ... (read more)

3. Quick And Easy Ways For Starting a Successful Membership Website
October 27, 2008

In the last few years, I have seen membership subscription websites take the Internet by storm. Most subscription sites offer their subscriptions for a fee; however, a handful offers their information for free to anyone who will provide an email address and name. The focus of this article will be on the fee-based membership subscription websites. Back in the Internet dark ages in 1997 or so, everyone expected everything online to be free of charge. For a few years, as more and more people purchased computers and chose to be online, that philosophy worked quite well. Around the year 2000, ... (read more)

4. Cheap Web Hosting is No Bargain
October 07, 2008

Ever heard the saying “Penny-wise and Dollar-foolish”? Well bargain priced website hosting may just represent the perfect example of watching a jar full of pennies while bucket loads of dollars fly out the window! When I launched my first website way back in the “dark ages” of 1997 I paid almost $150 a month in hosting and data transfer charges. My web host watched how many files I uploaded like a hawk and always seemed to send their hefty invoices earlier with each passing month. I’m obviously not the only one who felt that way, because suddenly a whole industry of ... (read more)

5. Body Cleansing Why Everyone Should Be Doing It
September 16, 2008

It is a very sound theory that during the Dark Ages, when the plague ravaged so many people in many parts of the world, the two primary suspected culprits behind it are poor hygiene and poor immune system. Bacterial infection was rampant because living conditions were horrible and no one really knew how to keep bodily cleanliness among the masses. Cleanliness was, in fact, a luxury only afforded by the wealthy (and they were certainly not about to share.) It should be noted that during that time, the words "shampoo" and "body soap" were not really particularly en vogue yet. When diseases set i... (read more)

6. The Truth to Conquer Emotional Eating
September 08, 2008

The Truth to conquer emotional eating is to manage your emotions. Yet managing emotions is not such an easy thing to do. With all the practice we as humans have had--that's centuries and centuries, we're still pretty much in the dark ages. And it just doesn't make sense for we are emotional beings. In fact our limbic emotional brain was developed before the reticular analytical brain. What is known is that all through out history, man has tried to "control" his emotions. The reticular portion of the brain has attempted to suppress the emotional limbic brain. There hasn't been to... (read more)

7. Western saddles and Evolution on Saddles
August 20, 2008

The western saddle has a remarkable history and development. While it is presently well thought-out as an exclusively American style, its origin can really be traced back to warriors of the Dark Ages and Moorish Horsemen. During 700's when Spain was invaded by Moors, they brought with them their exclusive style of riding and tack. Their saddles were specially intended for battle, with high forks and cantles for security and protection and longer stirrups for accommodating riding with armor. This was considered to be the saddle of the knights and the crusades. The Spaniards modified this sadd... (read more)

8. The Significance of the Celtic Cross
July 30, 2008

There are many places in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland where you will see large numbers of Celtic crosses. Many people confuse the Celtic cross with the High Cross and the Irish Memorial Cross, but it is completely different. The image of this cross is that of a conventional Latin cross with a circle connecting the stem and the arms. One usually associates this as a symbol of the Irish missionaries, but since they are found in England, Scotland and Wales as well as Ireland, it is really seen as a symbol of early Christianity. During the Dark Ages all of these locations did hav... (read more)

I find it very strange that in this day and age there are still wars going on all over the world. When will the leaders of the world wake up and realise that going to war never ever sorts world issues out? All war does is create pain and suffering especially for those families whose brave sons and daughters put their life on the line for their country. Why the hell haven’t we as a nation evolved enough to realise that war is not the answer and it will never be the answer. First Notice The eyes are often the first to show the signs of age. And nothing ages a person more than the skin surrounding the eyes: dark circles, puffiness or bags, and those darn wrinkles. 12. The Business Limitations To Entrepreneurialism
June 27, 2008

From a business perspective, entrepreneurialism is vital to commercial success and the health of the economy. We need individuals with bags of entrepreneurialism to drive forward business and to innovate to improve the way we live our lives, and without this entrepreneurialism, business would struggle and new ideas would never get off the ground. Entrepreneurialism is, in a nutshell, the primary driving force behind our lives as we know it, and without it we’d be living in the dark ages. But for all that entrepreneurialism is important, it certainly isn’t the be all and end all, and there a... (read more)

May 24, 2008

Emotional eating is by far the single largest reason people over eat. Yet, there is very little focus on how to handle emotions. It's like we are still in the dark ages. Just because we all have emotions, we're expected to know how to handle them. And what little training we do receive is more about how to avoid emotions than how to deal with them. We are told that emotions like happiness, joy, excitement are good and that emotions like anger, upset, depression are bad. Plague is a term applied to an infectious disease that spreads easily and, without antibiotics treatment, can be fatal. February 07, 2008

New Age philosophy may be the vehicle to move people from the dark ages to the next step, but it to does not go far enough - it's just another stepping stone that is moving very slowly and is destined to box itself in. There were centuries of life on the planet before religion came along where man fought to get a foothold on dry land and survive the elements. As he became more comfortable with his life out of the ocean, he began to organize his random thoughts into cohesive sentences so that others may understand what he was thinking. Communication between tribe members brought about c... (read more)

25. The 'New Dark Ages'
November 19, 2007

The 'New Dark Ages' is a blatant attempt to implicate its followers down the deadly wrong path to un-enlightenment and everlasting perdition. I am quite sure that many adults are completely unaware of all this. Because what I write of is just so 'unbelievable' and/or so totally strange and foreign to most adults, many will think I am exaggerating things to make a more exciting and readable article.
