The Energy Commission adopted the 2008 Standards on April 23, 2008, and the Building Standards Commission approved them for publication on September 11, 2008. The 2008 Residential Compliance Manual was adopted by the Commission on December 17, 2008, and the 2008 Non-residential Compliance Manual is scheduled for adoption in January 2009.

The final 2008 auto industry sales numbers are now in, and they do not make for pretty reading. As reported by the AP, every major manufacturer reported drops of more than 30 percent (year-on-year) in December. The Decline of the US Economy equals Failure for the Big 3 Auto Giants Leading the fall was Chrysler, selling 53 percent fewer vehicles than last December and 30 percent fewer in 2008 than in 2007. Uzbekistan's authoritarian leader Islam Karimov was sworn in Wednesday for another seven-year term, after a highly-disputed presidential election last month.
Western observers have denounced the December 23 vote as undemocratic.
The Uzbek Central Election Commission reported that Mr. Karimov received about 88 percent of the vote to win a third term.
President Karimov was opposed by three little-known candidates, all of whom supported his government.

Jazz pianist and composer Oscar Peterson died near Toronto, Ontario, Canada, December 23, of kidney failure. He was 82. Often compared to Erroll Garner and Art Tatum, Peterson modernized the jazz piano. His career spanned more than 45 years, and included dozens of albums with trios and orchestras, as well as numerous appearances in concert halls and festivals around the world.
