Discounting is a financial mechanism in which a debtor obtains the right to delay payments to a creditor, for a defined period of time, in exchange for a charge or fee. [1] Essentially, the party that owes money in the present purchases the right to delay the payment until some future date. [2] The discount, or charge, is simply the difference between the original amount owed in the present and the amount that has to be paid in the future to settle the debt. [1]The discount is usually associated with a discount rate, which is also called the discount yield.[1] [3][1][2]. The discount yield is simply the proportional share of the initial amount owed (initial liability) that must be paid to delay payment for 1 year. Discount Yield&_160;&_160;=&_160;&_160;"Charge" to Delay Payment for 1 year&_160;&_160;/&_160;&_160;Debt Liability It is also the rate at which the amount owed must rise to delay payment for 1 year.

Factoring is a method used by a business to obtain cash when the cash balance held by the firm is insufficient to meet current payment obligations of the business.
Your company effectively “sells” its invoices at a discount to their face value – when you calculate that your company will be better off using the proceeds to assist your growth than acting as a “bank” to your customers.
Any business can experience large cash flows in one period and smaller cash flows in other periods. Because of this, companies find it convenient to both maintain a cash balance o... (read more)

24. Holding on Price in a Down Economy
March 20, 2009
Discounting on price is not a sales strategy. It's an impulsive move made by desperate salespeople. In a tough economy, customers think and expect everything is going to be discounted. Because of this, salespeople feel it necessary to oblige the customer to close the deal. Unfortunately, however, this leads to a downward spiral, much like an addiction to an illegal drug. Once a discount is offered to one customer, it becomes easier and easier to offer it to another one. Before they know it, the discount is being offered to everyone. Like a drug, the "fix" is in the additional sales the salespe... (read more)
