Duck is the common name for a number of species in the Anatidae family of birds. The ducks are divided between several subfamilies listed in full in the Anatidae article; they do not represent a monophyletic group but a form taxon, since swans and geese are not considered ducks. Ducks are mostly aquatic birds, mostly smaller than the swans and geese, and may be found in both fresh water and sea water. Ducks are sometimes confused with several types of unrelated water birds with similar forms, such as loons or divers, grebes, gallinules, and coots. The word duck comes from Old English *duce, a derivative of the verb *ducan "to duck, bend down low as if to get under something, or dive", because of the way many species in the dabbling duck group feed by upending; compare with Dutch duiken and German tauchen "to dive". This word replaced Old English æned "duck", favored by æned presumably developing into a homophone of the outcome of Old English ende "end". Other Germanic languages still have similar words for "duck", for example, Dutch eend "duck" and German Ente "duck". The word æned was inherited form Proto-Indo-European; compare Latin anas "duck", Lithuanian ántis "duck", Ancient Greek nessa/netta (??ssa, ??tta) "duck", and Sanskrit atí "water bird", among others.

3. An Ethical Meal: Grey Squirrel
October 22, 2009
Let us face it; it tastes sweet, like a cross between a duck and lamb. The squirrel meat is low in fat as well as low in food miles and most important, free range. In fact, many people affirm that the grey squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) is just about as ethical as any other meat. Sales figures consolidate this statement as butchers affirm that they are selling squirrel meat like cup cakes. The grey squirrel is the American cousin of Great Britain’s endangered red variety which are becoming more and more a rarity nowadays.

21. What I did to Grow My Breasts Naturally
September 02, 2009
I remember it so vividly. It was at my office year-end party two years ago. We could bring our spouses so I brought my husband along for the first time. There we were, chatting away with some of my colleagues. My husband, being a very sociable man, took to the occasion like a duck to water. In no time, he was laughing and joking with the crowd. I’m the shy one but I had a good time, too.
It was after dinner when I excused myself to go to the washroom and when I returned I saw my colleague warming herself up to my husband. What made it worse was the dress she was wearing. To say ... (read more)

23. The Seven Deadly Sins of Waterfowl Hunting - Part 1
August 26, 2009
So you want to be a waterfowl hunter... seems like just about everybody does these days. Therein lies both a problem and a solution. More hunters, more stamps and licenses sold, more people enrolled in Ducks Unlimited, Delta Waterfowl and other conservation groups equals more critical habitat preserved (and hopefully more birds). More hunters... I struggle with that. It would be one thing if I could trust everyone was as lucky and educated in waterfowl hunting as me, but the fact of the matter is, most aren't. I can hardly bring myself to venture out onto the public marshes that I cut my teeth... (read more)
