Ivory Coast ebolavirus
Reston ebolavirus
Sudan ebolavirus

The virus is named after the Ebola River Valley in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire), which is near the site of the first recognized outbreak in 1976, in a mission hospital run by Flemish nuns.[2]

The genera Ebolavirus and Marburgvirus was originally classified as the species of the now nonexistent Filovirus genus. In March 1998, the Vertebrate Virus Subcommittee proposed in the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) to change the Filovirus genus to the Filoviridae family with two specific genera Ebola-like viruses and Marburg-like viruses. This proposal was implemented in Washington, D.C. as of April 2001 and in Paris as of July 2002. In 2000, another proposal was made in Washington, D.C. to change the "-like viruses" to "-virus" resulting in today's Ebolavirus and Marburgvirus.[3]

Rates of genetic change are one hundred times slower than Influenza A in humans, but on the same magnitude of that of Hepatitis B. Using these rates, the Ebolavirus and Marburgvirus are estimated to have diverged several thousand years ago.[4]

3. Help slow the epidemic!
April 30, 2009

Have you seen the flick "Out Break" starring Dustin Hoffman? I will never forget a scene shot from inside the cinema complex, where with some special effects you could see the microscopic germs being sucked in from the crowd of coughing movie goers, contracting the deadly Ebola virus. Since then I have not felt quite so comfortable with someone coughing near, or, on me. Slow the spread and reduce the risk to others by washing your hands before you eat or drink, by carrying a spare handkerchief in case you notice someone in need of one, which happens to be a very polite way of getting some... October 03, 2007

Ever heard of the virus whether in man or on the computer? The most popular one we all know is the HIV virus which is a very potent virus that can wipe away a 6 ft 5” man in just 6 months if he isn’t using his drugs. While this seems to be pretty fast, imagine the Ebola virus. If one catches it, he’s dead in just one week; at the most two weeks and you know the thing about Ebola is that it’s incurable. Why does the virus have such ability to wipe away a whole populace within just a few days, it is because of its ability to proliferate rapidly and spread faster than even wildfire. What d... Most people don't jump with excitement when the hideous task of obtaining a credit report arises. Regardless of who it's for, it's just not a fun activity. Some even avoid it like the Ebola virus. But when one is considering owner financing as an incentive to attract more buyers, they may very well dig their own financial grave if such a crucial necessity is overlooked. 16. Understanding Your Immune System
July 20, 2006

Understanding how your immune system works is the chief cornerstone of maintaining vibrant natural health. One only has to study the devastating effects HIV (the virus that causes AIDS) upon the body to realize what happens when our bodies lose our immunity shield. To say that the victims of AIDS become prey for every pathogen that walks by is an understatement. In my opinion HIV is far worse than the Ebola virus…. at least Ebola kills quickly… Your immune system is a “system”, hence it has components, or parts. What are the Parts that form your immune system? 1. Your ski... (read more)

17. Public Health Officials Prepare for Bioterrorism
August 30, 2005

Natural epidemics like the Ebola virus or SARS have the power to terrify, but even more chilling is the idea of disease used as a weapon.  An attack of anthrax through the U.S. postal system in 2001 put the United States on high alert to the problem of biological terrorism. The use of deadly germs to terrorize is not new. Medieval armies catapulted rotting corpses over castle walls. European explorers gave the blankets of smallpox patients as peace offerings to tribes of native Americans. Disease remains a weapon in the 21st century. The anthrax powder distributed through the U.S. mail f... (read more)

18. Ebola, Marburg Viruses Continue to Elude Medical Breakthrough
August 30, 2005

The Ebola and Marburg viruses have been known to modern science for less than four decades. In that time, they have killed about 2,000 people in total. Yet the merest mention of an outbreak evokes fear and dread, due to the deadly nature and rapid spread of these similar diseases. The Marburg and Ebola viruses were identified in 1967 and 1976 respectively. Both are filoviruses - so named because of their filament-like structure. They are symptomatically almost identical, causing fever, headaches, impaired liver and kidney function, and ultimately, both internal and external bleeding. The Wo... (read more)
