Ecuador ( IPA /'?kw?d??r/), officially the Republic of Ecuador ( Spanish República del Ecuador Spanish pronunciation [re'pußlika ðel ekwa'ðo?]), literally, "Republic of the equator") is a representative democratic republic in South America, bordered by Colombia on the north, by Peru on the east and south, and by the Pacific Ocean to the west. It is one of only two countries in South America (with Chile) that does not have a border with Brazil. The country also includes the Galápagos Islands in the Pacific, about 965 kilometers (600&_160;miles) west of the mainland. Ecuador straddles the equator, from which it takes its name, and has an area of 256,371 square kilometers (98,985&_160; mi²). Its capital city is Quito; its largest city is Guayaquil. Evidence of human cultures in Ecuador exists from c. 3500 B.C. [2] Many civilizations rose throughout Ecuador, such as the Valdivia Culture and Machalilla Culture on the coast, the Quitus (near present day Quito) and the Cañari (near present day Cuenca). Each civilization developed its own distinctive architecture, pottery, and religious interests. After years of fiery resistance by the Cayambes and other tribes, as demonstrated by the battle of Yahuarcocha (Blood Lake) where thousands of resistance fighters were killed and thrown in the lake, what is now Ecuador fell to the Incan expansion and was assimilated loosely into the Incan empire. Through a succession of wars and marriages and among the nations that inhabited the valley, the region became part of the Inca Empire. Atahualpa, one of the sons of the Inca emperor Huayna Capac, could not receive the crown of the Empire since the emperor had another son, Huascar, born in Cusco, the capital of the Inca Empire. Upon Huayna Capac's death, the empire was divided in two Atahualpa received the north, with his capital in Quito; Huascar received the south, with its capital in Cusco. In 1530, Atahualpa defeated Huascar and conquered the entire Empire for the crown of Quito. Barely a year later, in 1531, the Spanish conquistadors, under Francisco Pizarro, arrived to find an Inca empire torn by civil war. Atahualpa wanted to reestablish a unified Incan empire; the Spanish, however, had conquest intentions and established themselves in a fort in Cajamarca, captured Atahualpa during the Battle of Cajamarca, and held him for ransom. The Incas filled one room with gold and two with silver to secure his release. Despite being surrounded and vastly outnumbered, the Spanish executed Atahualpa. To escape the confines of the fort, the Spaniards fired all their cannons and broke through the lines of the bewildered Incans. In subsequent years, the Spanish colonists became the new elite, centering their power in the vice-royalties of Nueva Granada and Lima.

June 02, 2008
A struggling population and political turmoil has been a constant characteristic of Latin American countries. Unfortunately, the individuals that suffer the most are the children, the elderly and those that live in severe and extreme poverty.
The governments’ lack of interest in these groups has caused them to be forgotten even by a large number of their fellow countrymen and women. Luckily, there are still small groups of kind hearted educators, healthcare specialists and concerned citizens that want to make a difference in the lives of the less fortunate. As you may know, their presence... (read more)

13. However you Compute it, Ascendant Copper is One Very Undervalued Company
January 26, 2008
By D. J. Hadfield
Certainly, one of the most daunting challenges an investor faces is putting on the thinking cap and calculating the value of a mining or junior exploration company share. There are countless ways of valuing and comparing companies, and tens, if not hundreds of variables to consider when making your final investment decision.
How do we determine the value of a mining company? The first thing to keep in mind is that all production is prospective, although it comprises the company’s primary source of value.
In the case of Ascendant Copper (TSX:ACX), we have some ... (read more)

14. International Real Estate - Be Careful
January 07, 2008
Looking beyond our borders at the international real estate market might make sense for a second home or an investment. My wife and I recently bought a small lot a hundred yards from the Pacific Ocean in Ecuador, with the idea of having a second home there. The price, $3,000, shows why people look to other countries for real estate. Where in the United States can you buy a lot near the ocean for even ten times that much?
On the other hand, there are some risks in investing in property abroad. There are some things to think about that you don't normally have to consider when buying real ... (read more)

15. What Makes A Third World Country?
January 05, 2008
The term "Third World" was invented by French demographer Alfred Sauvy in 1952. Although it had political connotations at that time, it now simply refers to underdeveloped countries. It is typically thought to signify poverty more than anything else, but after our recent trip to South America, my wife and I have come to understand it differently.
My wife Ana was born and raised in Ecuador, and remembers using buckets of water to take a shower, because the city where she lived as a child didn't have running water in all parts. When we were in Ecuador in October of 2007, we were disap... (read more)

16. Low Cost Wild Adventures
January 04, 2008
My own wild adventures include summiting Mount Chimborazo in Ecuador (20,600 feet, the last 4,000 feet over glaciers), getting lost in the mountains of Colorado, and kayaking days from the nearest road in Canada, in six-foot Lake Superior waves. I may have had more of these trips if I had more money years ago. And of course time can be an issue when you want to have some adventure.
The good news is that some wild adventures aren't expensive or in far-away places. There is plenty of fun and excitement near home, if you look.

Hugo Chavez and the Bolivarianism for the Americas: The creation of ALBA
Hugo Rafael Chavez Frias was democratically elected for the Venezuelan Government in 1998. In the follow year renamed the country for “Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela,” introducing a new -or not that new-ideology for a domestic and international political re-construction: the Bolivarianism. 19. EcuaGold Looks to Future Success with Positive Sampling Results on Historic Producer
December 10, 2007
By Leia Michele Toovey
Historians, paleontologists, and geologists are fond of saying, “The past is the key to the present”. In the case of EcuaGold Resources’ (TSX.V: EGR) San Bartolomé mining concession, the proof of this axiom is quickly becoming evident.
The San Bartolomé concession is located in Ecuador, about 20 km southeast of Cuenca, Ecuador’s third largest city. Historically, it is Ecuador’s largest silver producer; between 1991 and 1994, mining interests extracted over one million ounces of silver.
Through grab sampling of tailings and waste dumps from past mining ac... (read more)

November 21, 2007
John Whittier Greenleaf, the American Quaker poet and abolitionist, was noted for saying, “I’ll lift you and you lift me, and we’ll both ascend together.” It looks as if Ascendant Copper (TSX:ACX) has taken some of his sage relationship advice as it ushers in a new phase of its ascendancy with its friendly takeover of St. Geneviève Resources (CNQ:SGVL) of Montréal.
