Electrical wiring in general refers to insulated conductors used to carry electricity, and associated devices. This article describes general aspects of electrical wiring as used to provide power in buildings and structures, commonly referred to as building wiring. This article is intended to describe common features of electrical wiring that should apply worldwide. The international standard wire sizes are given in the IEC 60228 standard of the International Electrotechnical Commission. In North America, the American Wire Gauge is used. Wiring safety codes are intended to protect people and buildings from electrical shock and fire hazards. Regulations may be established by city, county, provincial/state or national legislation, sometimes by adopting in amended form a model code produced by a technical standards-setting organization, or by a national standard electrical code. Electrical codes arose in the 1880s with the commercial introduction of electrical power. Many conflicting standards existed for the selection of wire sizes and other design rules for electrical installations.

The flow of electrical power or charge is called electricity. It is a basic part of nature. It is also one of our most widely used forms of energy. Some electrical fires are caused by lightning and defects in appliances, but usually a lot more are caused by poorly installed wiring, poor use of extension cords, and overloaded circuits. In fact, non-code wiring (perhaps done by do-it-your-selfers) causes twice as many fires as electrical appliances. A solar panel is an interconnected congregation of solar cells, also known as photovoltaic cells, intended to produce electricity. A single module of photovoltaic cells can only create a definite amount of wattage, which is not enough to supply power to the whole house. Hence, several modules or photovoltaic arrays are required to generate larger electrical power, and also to supply low- potential heat. A homemade solar panel installation is an assortment of small solar panels, panel batteries, interconnection wiring, and an inverter.

I’m proud to be an electrician. It has taken me years to learn the skills that I use every day to repair or add in my client’s homes. I know how to run new wires to the right spot to control a light.
