An embryo (from Greek ?µß????, plural ?µß??a, lit. "that which grows," from en- "in" + bryein "to swell, be full") is a multicellular diploid eukaryote in its earliest stage of development, from the time of first cell division until birth, hatching, or germination. In humans, it is called an embryo from the moment of implantation until the end of the 8th week, whereafter it is instead called a fetus. The development of the embryo is called embryogenesis. In organisms that reproduce sexually, once a sperm fertilizes an egg cell, the result is a cell called the zygote that has all the DNA of two parents. The resulting embryo derives 50 percent of its genetic makeup from each parent. In plants, animals, and some protists, the zygote will begin to divide by mitosis to produce a multicellular organism. The result of this process is an embryo. In animals, the development of the zygote into an embryo proceeds through specific recognizable stages of blastula, gastrula, and organogenesis. The blastula stage typically features a fluid-filled cavity, the blastocoel, surrounded by a sphere or sheet of cells, also called blastomeres.

1. Reasons and truths about age for In Vitro Fertilization
November 13, 2008
Female age is very crucial in consideration of the possibility for getting pregnant. The real problem is the egg number and quality - which translates over to embryo quality after fertilization. Increased infertility with age is a well documented problem and very visible in modern society. As women wait longer to have children, a larger percentage of couples have fertility problems due to the quality of the eggs, and other problems that affect fertility and are more common in older women.
Womens liberation has brought many gains to women. However, as women increasingly stop childbearing,... (read more)

2. Medcines and Drugs to Be Avoided During Pregnancy and Breast Feeding
November 13, 2008
Adverse effects of drugs vary with the age of the unborn in the uterus. To know more about these, the nine months period of pregnancy can be divided into two phases:
Early Pregnancy: Formation of Embryo
From the start of the first trimester the cells of the fertilized ovum multiply rapidly to form an embryo, which after a period of 3 months, is called a foetus. In the early part of this phase ( up to 17 days) the teratogenic drugs (malformation-causing drugs) may kill the embryo.
Beyond this period, up to 55 days (period of organs formation) is the most vulnerable times when th... (read more)

4. Risks and Opportunities of In Vitro Fertilization
October 30, 2008
In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is a procedure where the eggs of women are taken from the ovary. Then they are fertilized with sperm in a laboratory method, and then the fertilized embryo is returned to the womans uterus. Dr. Mark Rispler ( http://www.innovativefertility.com ) uses extensive diagnostic testing to determine a patients chances for successful IVF
In Vitro Fertilization is a procedure in which the connecting of eggs and sperm takes place outside of the womans body. A woman may be given fertility drugs prior to this procedure so that several eggs mature in the ovaries at the same... (read more)

5. Life Of The Butterfiles
October 30, 2008
Butterflies start life as eggs laid on plants. The egg consists of an outer casing, or chorion, inside which is the female’s fertilized ovum. There is always a minute opening, the micropyle, which is visible as a small pit at the top of some eggs.
This structure allows the male sperm to fertilize the egg and probably allows the developing embryo to breathe. Sometimes eggs are laid singly, at other times they may be in bunches
The eggs take a variable amount of time to hatch; indeed some butterflies remain as eggs through the winter, only hatching when the warmth of spring arrives. ... (read more)

6. Pros & Cons of In Vitro Fertilization
October 27, 2008
The In Vitro Fertilization method for conception of a human embryo outside the mothers body works like this-multiple ovas, or eggs are withdrawn from the mothers body and put into special laboratory culture dishes called Petri dishes; sperm from the father are then added, or in several cases sperm is inserted directly into an ovum, a method known as intracytoplasmic sperm injection.
If the fertilization succeeds, a fertilized ovum (or several fertilized ovums), next undergoing several cell divisions, is either transported to the mother or a surrogate mothers body for normal development i... (read more)

The most common situate is the abdomen (near the adrenal gland) but can also be found in the chest, neck, pelvis, or other sites. 8. Embryology Study Techniques
October 20, 2008
The study of Human Embryology can be a difficult subject for many students. Most students have a hard time visualizing the developing embryo because it progresses in four dimensions. The successful student will be able to visualize the most significant events in the development of the human embryo. The following are effective study strategies and tips from past students that succeeded in their Embryology course.
Make a Time line. Human Embryology can be overwhelming if viewed as one solid chunk of events. It is more efficient to study the embryo development in short segments of time.... (read more)

17. Are Meat and Milk From Cloned Animals Really Safe To Eat?
July 30, 2008
Are Meat and Milk From Cloned Animals Really Safe To Eat? By Sandy Powers
The cloning process for cattle is almost identical to human embryo cloning techniques. The process, known as somatic cell nuclear transfer, involves the removal of an egg cell’s DNA and replaces it with DNA from a body cell of a donor. The resulting cell can be chemically programmed to divide. If the cell survives, it may become an exact genetic duplicate of the body cell donor animal. In practice, the process produces a high proportion of deformed animals that cannot surviv... (read more)

If Androgen is released, the embryo develops into a male, if there is no androgen, the fetus develops into a female. The X or Y chromosome determine w... (read more)

April 04, 2008
Early miscarriage is unfortunately a very common occurrence. Very early miscarriages occur prior to six weeks and are sometimes referred to as a chemical pregnancy whereby the embryo didn't develop but many symptoms and signs of pregnancy existed. Usually, early miscarriage occurs for reasons unclear to the woman or the doctor. It's extremely rare for it to occur as a result of minor trauma like a fall. Some miscarriages can be caused by environmental factors, maternal age, drug use or sexually transmitted diseases but the vast majority of miscarriages occur through no fault of the woman who m...
