As autumn slowly takes hold of our world, it’s time start taking in the sights and sounds of the season. It’s also the perfect time to start planning for Halloween, which means there are certain films to watch before the trick-or-treating begins. If you’ve never had a total scary movie night to celebrate Halloween, you have really been missing out! Watching little superheroes and monsters walk around your neighborhood collecting candy can be a little unnerving for different reasons, but nothing gets the chills going up & down your spine like watching a truly frightening movie. In fact, scary movies are about as old as movies themselves. It seems odd that some of the first films put to celluloid are about vampires and other terrifying creatures, but then again, these spooky things are a part of our natural behavior. In some ways, we’ve evolved as a species based on our reaction to being afraid. Luckily, you don’t have to worry about whether or not you’ll be a detriment to humanity when you watch a scary movie — you’ll just have a hard time sleeping with the lights off. If you’re new to scary movies or maybe just a little unsure of where to start your scary movie marathon, here are five terrifying movies that’ll make the countdown to Halloween absolutely rock: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre — This is one of the grandaddy’s of horror films. With murky origins regarding it being based on a true story or not, and a bone-chilling bad guy with a human skin mask, this one will scare you without question. Halloween — When a young man decides to murder his sister one Halloween, he’s sent to a mental hospital. He ultimately escapes, dons his trademark garb, and decides that it’s time to keep killing. The white mask is unsettling & has no emotion. It’s the stuff of nightmares. Friday the 13th — Summer camp is supposed to be fun and exciting, but this movie makes it hard to ever want to go to camp ever again. After a young boy drowns because his camp counselors were too busy with each other instead of watching him, there seems to be a curse of sorts on campground. The twist at the end will ruin your life forever. A Nightmare on Elm Street — This movie has a lot going on, and it takes the usual scary movie into some pretty intelligent territory. Why do the regular kill/slash thing when you can take it into the realm of dreams? Dreams & reality have always been blurred, and this movie really makes a point to blur the line even further. The Nun — Take your Halloween movie night on the road, and check out the latest scary movie at your local theater. This film is about an investigation into the death of a nun under mysterious circumstances. The priest & nun-in-training that are part of the investigation soon realize that things are not what they seem at the abbey. There are too many films to watch when it comes to scary movies. Halloween seems like the perfect time for these kinds of films, but truth be told, watching a movie that absolutely terrifies you seems like something not to do. Fight that feeling, get some popcorn ready, and just to make it really count, turn the lights off in the entire house. On second thought, invite some friends over & make it a really fun night.
