If you’re a fan of action movies, you know that there are certain things you look for when it comes to making a good movie. You’re always on the lookout for killer explosions, unique ways to destroy priceless automobiles, and the best way to lay waste to a major metropolitan city without any human collateral damage. These are just givens, but it’s when this basic formula for a good action movie gets toyed with that things become a bit suspect. Enter the love story. According to some aficionados, nothing ruins a good action flick like a ridiculous ‘B story’ love interest. Not only does it feels tacked on, but it puts the protagonist in danger for no reason. Are many of these love stories cheesy? Sure, but cheese sells and keeps the audience on the edge of their seat. It ups the ante on the emotional side of things, and if there is one thing a good love story can do, it’s that it will stay with you long after the credits roll. But can action movies and love stories successfully coexist? Absolutely. In fact, look back at the silent film era a century ago, and many of those movies are nothing more than a good guy trying to help a damsel in distress from some sort of evil. Tension built based on the images, as well as the frenzied soundtrack provided by the movie house piano player. Here are five action movies with hidden, and even not-so-hidden, love stories: Date Night — Couples everywhere are trying to bring back the spice in their relationship. This movie goes beyond the whole “seven year itch”. This movies takes a regular husband & wife, a case of mistaken identity, and turns it into the adventure of a lifetime with two comedic giants. True Lies — Espionage, secret lives, and saving the world all while trying to maintain a very mundane family life is a trope we’re getting pretty used to seeing in TV and movies. However, back in the 90s, this movie really put it on the map. It’s an action classic with a sweet side. The Bodyguard — Everyone remembers the otherworldly soundtrack for this movie by the late Whitney Houston, but few truly remember the life-changing love story that builds throughout the film. The ending will break you. Romancing the Stone — If you’re an 80s film buff & dig romantic action drama/comedies, this is the standard by which they are all judged. The Last of the Mohicans — This movie is set against the French and Indian War & packs more action than you could imagine. The battle scenes are intense & engaging, the love scenes moving, but what takes the cake are the last few sequences of the movie. Brilliance. Action movies often get a bad reputation for being testosterone-fueled exploits filled with big booms, eye-candy for males, and no real story to speak of. This isn’t a fair assessment, but it’s not completely untrue. As such, the development of a love story in the midst of all the action is actually a good way to change these perceptions. So, even if you’re not totally OK with the added twist of a love story, it may actually give the genre new life. Looking for THE spot for awesome action movies in Chandler?
